What is Mounjaro 7.5mg?

Mounjaro 7.5mg, also known as tirzepatide 7.5mg, is a weekly weight loss injection belonging to the twincretin class of drugs. It mimics the effects of two gut hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, which help reduce appetite and delay stomach emptying.

Mounjaro, or tirzepatide, is the latest weight-loss injection licensed by the MHRA (UK’s regulatory authority) as of November 2023. It is approved for weight loss and management in adults with obesity (BMI 30 kg/m² or higher) or those who are overweight (BMI 27–30 kg/m²) with weight-related health issues.

Mounjaro Doses

Mounjaro 7.5mg is a transition dose used to prepare your body for higher strengths. The transition doses include:

  • Mounjaro 2.5mg
  • Mounjaro 7.5mg
  • Mounjaro 12.5mg

These are followed by maintenance doses, which can be one of the following:

  • Mounjaro 2.5mg
  • Mounjaro 5mg
  • Mounjaro 7.5mg

Transition doses are not meant for long-term use but are designed to help your body adjust to higher levels of Mounjaro. A maintenance dose is intended for long-term use if you tolerate the treatment well and are satisfied with the weight loss results.

How Does Mounjaro 7.5mg Work?

Mounjaro 7.5mg contains the active ingredient tirzepatide. It works by mimicking two natural gut hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, earning it the nickname “twincretin.” These hormones are produced after eating and help to:

  • Increase insulin release from the pancreas
  • Control blood sugar levels
  • Signal fullness to the brain, reducing appetite and curbing cravings
  • Slow down stomach emptying

This combination of actions ultimately supports weight loss by suppressing appetite, increasing satiety, and improving overall metabolic control.

How Effective is Mounjaro for Weight Loss?

Clinical studies have shown that tirzepatide, administered as a weekly injection, is highly effective for weight loss. The SURMOUNT trials have demonstrated significant weight reduction. For example, the SURMOUNT 1 trial indicated an average weight loss of 22.5% over 72 weeks at the highest maintenance dose (15mg).

What is Mounjaro 7.5mg Injection?

Overview

Mounjaro 7.5mg is a weight loss treatment available as a pre-filled pen for once-weekly subcutaneous injections. It is the UK-licensed version of the US-approved weight loss injection, Zepbound, and was approved by the MHRA in November 2023 for weight loss and management in adults with obesity (BMI 30 kg/m² or higher) or those who are overweight (BMI 27–30 kg/m²) with weight-related conditions.

How Does It Work?

The active ingredient in Mounjaro is Tirzepatide, which binds to both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. These hormones are naturally released after eating and help control blood sugar levels. By mimicking their actions, Tirzepatide signals your body to increase insulin release, regulate blood sugar, and send fullness signals to your brain, reducing appetite and preventing cravings, ultimately aiding in weight loss.

How Effective is It?

The SURMOUNT 1 trial showed that Mounjaro can lead to an average weight loss of 22.5% over 72 weeks in individuals with obesity but without diabetes when used at the highest maintenance dose (15mg).

  • Have a BMI of 30 kg/m² or higher (obesity), or
  • Have a BMI between 27 kg/m² and 30 kg/m² (overweight) and experience weight-related health issues such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal blood fats, obstructive sleep apnea, or a history of heart attack, stroke, or vascular problems.

How does Mounjaro 7.5mg Injection Work?

Mechanism of Action

Mounjaro 7.5mg, like all Mounjaro strengths, contains the active ingredient tirzepatide. Tirzepatide works by mimicking two natural gut hormones—glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). Because it acts like both incretins, it has earned the nickname "twincretin."

Hormonal Effects

These hormones are released naturally when you eat. By binding to GLP-1 and GIP receptors, tirzepatide signals your pancreas to release more insulin, which helps control blood sugar levels. At the same time, these hormones send signals to your brain and stomach to promote fullness, reduce appetite, and prevent cravings, ultimately supporting weight loss.

How Incretins Aid Weight Loss

  • Suppress appetite
  • Increase feelings of fullness (satiety)
  • Slow gastric emptying

Early research in diet-induced obese mice showed that combining GLP-1 and GIP resulted in significantly greater weight loss. Recognizing this potential, Eli Lilly patented tirzepatide in 2016.

How do you use Mounjaro 7.5mg Injection?

Dosage and Guidelines

  • Always use Mounjaro exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are unsure, ask your healthcare provider.
  • Each KwikPen contains 4 doses and is available in 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, or 15mg.

Determining Your Dose

  • Starting Dose: Begin with 2.5mg once a week for 4 weeks.
  • After 4 weeks, your doctor will usually increase your dose to 5mg once a week.
  • Your dose may then be increased in 2.5mg increments (up to 15mg) if needed. Your doctor will advise you to remain on each dose for at least 4 weeks before increasing.
  • Everyone is different, so there is no need to rush your dose increase. You can stay on a dose for an extra month or longer if it works well for you. If you experience side effects or do not tolerate a higher dose, you can reduce or maintain your current dose.
  • Only increase your dose if you are comfortable with your current dose and wish to boost your weight loss.

Scheduling Your Injection

  • Use your KwikPen on the same day each week, with or without meals.
  • To help you remember, mark the day on a calendar or note it in your “Instructions for Use.”
  • If you need to change your injection day, wait at least 3 days since your last dose and then continue weekly on the new day.

How to Inject Using the KwikPen

  • Preparation:
    • Read the complete guide that comes with your pen.
    • Remove the pen from its packaging and check the expiration date.
    • Choose a clean, dry injection site on your stomach, thigh, or upper arm (if you also use insulin, use a different site).
  • Needle Setup:
    • Remove the pen cap and clean your injection site with an alcohol swab.
    • Always use a new needle for each injection. Attach the needle securely by pushing it on straight and twisting until tight, then remove the outer needle shield.
  • Injection Process:
    • Hold the pen at a 90-degree angle against your skin and press the button on top to inject.
    • Keep the pen in place for at least 5 seconds before releasing the button to retract the needle.
  • Aftercare:
    • Dispose of the used pen and needle in a sharps container or follow your healthcare professional’s instructions.
    • Rotate your injection sites each week to avoid skin irritation.

After completing our online consultation form, you can securely purchase Mounjaro 7.5mg injection from courierpharmacy.co.uk.

Who Should Not Take Mounjaro 7.5mg Injection?

Contraindications

  • Do not use the Mounjaro KwikPen if you are allergic to tirzepatide or any other ingredient in this medicine. For more details, please refer to the product information leaflet.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Digestive Issues:
Consult your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before using Mounjaro if you have severe digestive problems or delayed stomach emptying, including severe gastroparesis.
  • Pancreatitis:
Avoid use if you have ever had pancreatitis, which causes severe, persistent stomach and back pain.
  • Eye Conditions:
Do not use if you have eye problems such as diabetic retinopathy or macular edema.
  • Diabetes Medications:
If you are taking a sulfonylurea or insulin, Mounjaro may lead to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Your doctor may need to adjust your medication doses to reduce this risk.
  • Dehydration:
When starting Mounjaro, you may experience vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea that could lead to dehydration and impact kidney function. It is important to drink plenty of fluids and contact your doctor if you have any concerns.

Age and Reproductive Considerations

  • Children and Adolescents:
This medicine is not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age, as it has not been studied in this group.
  • Pregnancy:
Mounjaro should not be used during pregnancy because its effects on an unborn child are unknown. If you are pregnant, suspect you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, consult your doctor before use. Contraception is advised while using Mounjaro.
  • Breastfeeding:
It is unknown whether tirzepatide passes into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, consult your doctor to decide whether to delay treatment or stop breastfeeding.

Driving and Operating Machinery

  • Although Mounjaro is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery, combining it with a sulfonylurea or insulin may cause low blood sugar, which can impair concentration. Avoid driving or using machines if you experience symptoms such as headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, hunger, confusion, irritability, rapid heartbeat, or sweating. For more information, please consult your doctor.

Additional Product Information

  • Sodium Content:
Each dose of Mounjaro KwikPen contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg), making it essentially sodium-free.
  • Benzyl Alcohol:
Every 0.6 ml dose contains 5.4 mg of benzyl alcohol [E1519]. Benzyl alcohol may trigger allergic reactions. If you have liver or kidney disease, consult your doctor or pharmacist, as high levels can accumulate in the body and cause metabolic acidosis.

  • Constipation
These side effects are most common when first starting tirzepatide and often lessen over time, particularly in weight management settings.

Common (affects up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Hypoglycemia when used with metformin and a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor, with symptoms similar to those noted above.
  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or eczema.
  • Dizziness, particularly observed in weight management patients.
  • Low blood pressure, also noted in weight management.
  • Decreased appetite in patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • Abdominal pain, indigestion, bloating, burping, and flatulence.
  • Reflux or heartburn (GERD), due to stomach acid rising into the esophagus.
  • Hair loss, noted in weight management.
  • Fatigue.

Does Mounjaro 7.5mg interact with any other medicines?

Effect on Medication Absorption

Tirzepatide may slow stomach emptying, which can alter how other oral medications are absorbed, especially when you first begin treatment.

Paracetamol

  • When taken with tirzepatide, the peak concentration (Cmax) of paracetamol is reduced by 50% and it takes an extra hour to reach its peak (tmax).
  • No dose adjustment for paracetamol is necessary.
  • The impact on paracetamol absorption is dose-dependent. Lower doses of tirzepatide (0.5 and 1.5 mg) only slightly affect paracetamol levels, and after four weekly doses (5/5/8/10 mg), paracetamol’s Cmax, tmax, and overall exposure (AUC) remain unchanged.

Oral Contraceptives

  • A single 5 mg dose of tirzepatide can reduce the peak concentration and overall exposure (AUC) of oral contraceptives, delaying their peak levels:
    • Ethinyl estradiol: Cmax reduced by 59%, AUC by 20%, with a 4-hour delay in tmax.
    • Norelgestromin: Cmax reduced by 55%, AUC by 23%, with a 4.5-hour delay in tmax.
    • Norgestimate: Cmax reduced by 66%, AUC by 20%, with a 2.5-hour delay in tmax.
  • These changes are not clinically significant for women with a normal BMI, so no dose adjustment is needed.

Special Considerations for Overweight or Obese Women

  • There is limited data on how tirzepatide affects oral contraceptives in overweight or obese women, so reduced effectiveness cannot be ruled out.
  • It is recommended to switch to a non-oral contraceptive method or add a barrier method for 4 weeks when starting tirzepatide and after each dose increase.
