What is Otomize Ear Spray Used For?

Purpose

Courierpharmacy’s Otomize Ear Spray is designed to treat outer ear infections, medically known as otitis externa.

How does Otomize Ear Spray Work?

Active Ingredients

Courierpharmacy’s Otomize Ear Spray contains three key active ingredients that work together to ease pain, cut down inflammation, and address the root cause of an ear infection. The ingredients include:

  • Neomycin: An antibiotic from the aminoglycoside family that targets a wide range of bacteria.
  • Glacial Acetic Acid: Creates an acidic environment in the ear that helps stop bacterial growth.
  • Dexamethasone: A strong anti-inflammatory that reduces swelling and relieves pain.

Antibacterial Protection

Outer ear infections, or otitis externa, occur when bacteria multiply in the ear. Often referred to as Swimmer’s Ear, these infections can develop when water trapped in the ear after swimming or bathing creates a warm, moist environment ideal for bacteria. Otomize Ear Spray uses Neomycin to quickly eliminate these bacteria and prevent the infection from worsening.

Anti-inflammatory Relief

When your immune system responds to a bacterial infection, inflammation can occur, leading to pain, redness, and swelling. The inclusion of Dexamethasone in Otomize Ear Spray helps soothe irritation and reduce inflammation, supporting the antibiotic action to effectively treat the infection.

Who Should Not Use Otomize Ear Spray?

General Contraindications

  • Do not use if you are hypersensitive to any of the active ingredients or other components listed in the patient information leaflet.
  • This product should not be used by patients with a diagnosed or suspected perforated eardrum or by those who have a tympanostomy tube (grommet) in place.
  • It is not suitable for infants or neonates under 2 years of age. Do not use if you have grommets fitted or a perforated eardrum.

Medical Conditions and Precautions

  • Consult a doctor before use if you have a mitochondrial disease or if there is any open wound or damaged skin in the affected ear.
  • Overuse may lead to hearing loss or deafness, so this treatment should not be used more than three times a year. If you suffer from frequent ear infections, consult your doctor to investigate a possible underlying cause, such as chronic otitis media.
  • Discontinue use and seek medical advice if you develop irritation or a rash, or if your condition worsens or does not improve within 7 days.

Specific Risks

  • When treating outer ear infections with aminoglycoside-containing products, there is an increased risk of drug-induced deafness in patients with a perforated eardrum. Ensure there is no eardrum perforation before using Otomize Ear Spray.
  • Corticosteroid/antibiotic combinations should not be used for more than 7 days without clinical improvement, as prolonged use can mask infection spread.
  • In children, there is a risk of adrenal suppression from absorbed steroids, especially with prolonged use, along with a risk of skin sensitization and antibiotic resistance.
  • Neomycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic in the spray, can cause irreversible, partial, or total deafness when used on open wounds or damaged skin, especially in cases of renal or hepatic impairment. Use high doses or prolonged treatment with caution in young children.
  • There is an increased risk of ototoxicity with aminoglycosides in patients with certain mitochondrial mutations (such as m.1555A>G), which may lead to deafness even at recommended serum levels. These mutations are rare, but consider the risk, particularly if there is a maternal history of deafness.

Additional Considerations

  • Visual disturbances, such as blurred vision, may occur with corticosteroid use. Patients experiencing such symptoms should be referred to an ophthalmologist for evaluation, as these may indicate cataracts, glaucoma, or conditions like central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR).
  • This product contains methyl and propyl hydroxybenzoates (E218 and E216), which may trigger allergic reactions, and stearyl alcohol, which may cause local skin reactions like contact dermatitis.

What is otitis externa?

Otitis externa is an infection or inflammation of the outer ear canal, usually caused by bacteria or fungi. It is often called swimmer’s ear because it frequently occurs after water exposure.

What causes otitis externa?

It is mostly caused by bacteria, though fungi can also be responsible. Risk factors include swimming, excessive moisture, trauma to the ear canal, and the regular use of earplugs or hearing aids.

Common symptoms include ear pain, itching, redness, swelling, discharge, and temporary hearing loss. In more severe cases, the pain may extend to the neck or face.

How is otitis externa treated?

Treatment typically involves topical medications such as antibiotic or antifungal ear drops or sprays. In severe cases, oral antibiotics might be necessary.

Can otitis externa go away on its own?

Mild cases may resolve on their own, but it is best to seek medical treatment to prevent the infection from worsening and to relieve discomfort.

How long does otitis externa last?

With proper treatment, most cases improve within 7 to 10 days. Without treatment, the condition may persist or worsen.

How can I prevent otitis externa?

To reduce your risk, keep your ears dry, avoid inserting objects (including cotton swabs) into your ear canal, and use earplugs while swimming. Tilt your head to drain water after swimming or bathing.

Is otitis externa contagious?

No, otitis externa is not contagious. It typically results from an overgrowth of bacteria or fungi that naturally live in the ear canal.

Can otitis externa cause permanent hearing loss?

Generally, it causes only temporary hearing loss due to swelling. Permanent hearing loss is rare and usually occurs only in severe or untreated cases.

Who is most at risk for developing otitis externa?

Those most at risk include frequent swimmers, individuals with eczema or psoriasis, and people who regularly use hearing aids or earplugs. The condition is also more common in hot or humid climates.
