What is Fybogel?

Fybogel Lemon is a natural fibre supplement containing Ispaghula Husk, a plant-based source of dietary fibre. This easy-to-use supplement helps boost your daily fibre intake, supporting a healthier digestive system. By gently easing constipation through natural methods, Fybogel Lemon promotes regular bowel movements without the discomfort, straining, or sudden urgency that some other laxatives may cause. It offers a gentle yet effective solution for maintaining digestive health.

Fybogel Lemon is ideal for anyone needing to increase their fibre intake, particularly for managing constipation. It is safe to use during pregnancy and can also be helpful for improving digestive health or managing specific conditions requiring a high-fibre diet. You can conveniently purchase Fybogel Lemon from courierpharmacy.co.uk after completing the online consultation form.

What is the Active Ingredient in Fybogel?

Fybogel contains 3.5g of Ispaghula Husk per sachet as its active ingredient. This natural fibre helps support healthy digestion and relieve constipation.

What is Fybogel Used For?

Fybogel is used to:

  • Relieve constipation
  • Regulate bowel movements and make stools easier to pass
  • Support normal bowel function in individuals with an ileostomy or colostomy, and help manage chronic diarrhea caused by conditions like diverticular disease, ulcerative colitis, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Fybogel works by naturally stimulating the bowel and softening stools. It is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, though it may take up to three days to show full effects.

How Does Fybogel Work?

Fybogel contains Ispaghula husk, a type of fiber that acts as a bulk-forming laxative. When it absorbs water in the gut, it increases stool volume. This added bulk helps stimulate the muscles in the bowel, encouraging movement through the digestive system and relieving constipation. It may take up to three days to notice improvements in digestion.

How to Use Fybogel

Fybogel is for oral use only. Always follow the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are unsure, ask for clarification.

Instructions for Taking Fybogel:

  1. Fill a glass with around 150ml of cold water.
  2. Add the recommended amount of Fybogel (check dosage below), stir well, and drink immediately. It’s best to take it after meals.
  3. Never take Fybogel without water.
  4. Make sure to take it at least 30 minutes before or after other medications. Avoid taking it just before bed.

Dosage:

  • Adults and children over 12 years: Take one sachet in the morning and one in the evening, preferably after meals.
  • Children aged 6 to 12 years: Take half to one level 5ml spoonful, depending on age and size, in the morning and evening, ideally after meals.
  • Children under 6 years: Not recommended for children under 6.

If your symptoms worsen or you do not have a bowel movement after three days, consult a doctor.

What to Do if You Take Too Much:

If you take more than the recommended dose, do not exceed it. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

What If You Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose. Simply continue with your next dose as scheduled.

Who Should Not Take Fybogel?

You should not take Fybogel if:

  • You are allergic to Ispaghula husk or any of the other ingredients (check the patient information leaflet for more details).
  • You have experienced a sudden change in bowel habits lasting more than two weeks.
  • You suffer from a bowel obstruction, such as an intestinal blockage or fecal impaction.
  • You have a weakened bowel wall (colonic atony).
  • Your gut moves material slowly (slow gut motility).
  • You have trouble swallowing or experience throat problems.

Tell Your Doctor, Pharmacist, or Nurse if:

  • You have phenylketonuria (PKU), as Fybogel contains aspartame, which is a source of phenylalanine.
  • You experience unexplained rectal bleeding or cannot pass stools after using laxatives.
  • Your symptoms do not improve after three days of using Fybogel.
  • You have swallowing difficulties or other throat issues.

Precautions:

  • Healthcare workers or caregivers should take extra care, as inhaling the powder may lead to allergic reactions.
  • If not taken with enough liquid, Fybogel can cause chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Elderly or weakened patients should use Fybogel under medical supervision.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

Fybogel is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Important Information for Specific Conditions:

  • Each sachet of Fybogel contains 16 mg of aspartame, which is a source of phenylalanine. If you have PKU, this could be harmful.
  • Each sachet contains less than 1 mmol of sodium (23 mg), meaning it is essentially 'sodium-free.'
  • Each sachet also contains 0.25 mmol (9.76 mg) of potassium. Those with reduced kidney function or on a controlled potassium diet should consider this.

What Are the Side Effects of Fybogel?

As with all medications, Fybogel may cause side effects, but not everyone will experience them. Some people may have an allergic reaction, which could include:

  • Difficulty breathing, wheezing, or coughing
  • Skin rash, itching, or swelling
  • A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)

Fybogel contains allergens that may be absorbed through skin contact, inhalation, or ingestion. This could result in:

  • Red or itchy eyes
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Skin rash

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

In some cases, when you begin taking Fybogel, the extra fiber in your diet may cause:

  • Gas (flatulence)
  • Bloating

These effects should reduce as your body gets used to the fiber. If you experience any other symptoms or discomfort, inform your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have any concerns about side effects, or if you notice any side effects not mentioned here, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. You can also report side effects directly online at www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard. Reporting side effects helps to gather more information on the safety of this medication.

  • Codeine
  • Morphine

  • Insulin: If you have diabetes and use insulin, your doctor may need to adjust your insulin dose while taking Fybogel Lemon with meals.
  • Thyroid medications: Your doctor may need to change the dose of your thyroid medication when using Fybogel.

Always inform your healthcare provider of all the medications you're taking before starting Fybogel to ensure safety.

Fybogel FAQs

What is Fybogel, and What is it Used For?

Fybogel is a natural fibre supplement used to relieve constipation. It comes in convenient sachets that dissolve quickly in water to create a pleasant-tasting drink. The formula is free from sugar and gluten, containing natural ispaghula husk fibre to help maintain regular bowel movements.

Available in three flavours—orange, lemon, and plain—Fybogel is sold in boxes of 30 sachets. It is manufactured by Forum Health and distributed by Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare.

Fybogel is used for:

  • Easing constipation
  • Regulating bowel movements and making stools easier to pass
  • Supporting normal bowel function in people with an ileostomy, colostomy, or those with chronic diarrhea caused by conditions like diverticular disease, ulcerative colitis, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Fybogel works naturally to stimulate the bowel, soften stools, and is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Results may take up to three days.

How Does Fybogel Work?

Fybogel contains ispaghula husk, a bulk-forming laxative. The fibre absorbs fluid in the gut, increasing the stool volume. This added bulk stimulates the muscles in the intestine, helping move contents through the digestive tract, easing constipation. It may take up to three days to notice improvements.

Does Fybogel Cause Weight Loss?

Fybogel helps with constipation by facilitating the passage of trapped stools, which can reduce bloating. However, it is not designed for weight loss and will not lead to fat or weight reduction.

Are There Any Alternatives to Fybogel?

Other ways to manage constipation include:

  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Exercising regularly
  • Eating a high-fiber diet rich in vegetables

Fybogel is a helpful solution for constipation caused by low dietary fibre, and unlike other laxatives, it doesn’t contain chemical stimulants.

How to Use Fybogel Hi-Fibre Sachets

To use, stir one sachet into 150 ml of water and drink immediately after the fizzing stops. For best results, take Fybogel after meals and avoid taking it just before bed.

How Long Does Fybogel Take to Work?

Most people notice an improvement within 2-3 days. If no bowel movement occurs after three days, consult your doctor.

Fybogel Dosage

  • Adults and children over 12 years: Take one sachet in the morning and another in the evening, or as directed by your doctor.
  • Children aged 6-12 years: Take half a teaspoon to one 5 ml level spoonful, depending on size and age, morning and evening.

If you do not experience a bowel movement after three days, contact your doctor.

What Are the Ingredients in Fybogel?

Each Fybogel sachet contains 3.5g of ispaghula husk. The inactive ingredients are:

  • Aspartame
  • Saccharin sodium sweeteners
  • Potassium bicarbonate
  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Polysorbate 80
  • Silica colloidal anhydrous
  • Citric acid
  • Riboflavin sodium phosphate (for colour)

What Are the Side Effects of Fybogel?

Not everyone will experience side effects, but some may experience bloating or flatulence due to increased fibre intake. These symptoms typically decrease over time. If they persist, you may want to reduce the dosage to one sachet per day. If other side effects occur, or if the symptoms continue, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Always take Fybogel with water and do not exceed the recommended dose.

Who Should Not Take Fybogel?

Do not use Fybogel if:

  • You are allergic to any of its ingredients.
  • You have a bowel obstruction or weakened bowel muscles.
  • You have phenylketonuria (PKU) because Fybogel contains aspartame, which is a source of phenylalanine.
