What is Zidoval Vaginal Gel?

Zidoval Vaginal Gel is a prescription treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV). It contains metronidazole, an antibiotic that targets the bacteria responsible for BV, helping to restore a natural bacterial balance in the vagina.

What is the active ingredient in Zidoval Vaginal Gel?

Each gram of Zidoval gel contains 7.5mg of the active substance metronidazole.

What is Zidoval Vaginal Gel Used For?

Zidoval Vaginal Gel is a prescription treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV), a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in natural bacteria. The gel contains metronidazole, an antibiotic that helps eliminate the bacteria responsible for BV. By applying Zidoval directly inside the vagina, it works to restore a healthy bacterial balance, relieving symptoms such as unusual discharge and an unpleasant odour. It is typically prescribed for once-daily use over five days, offering targeted relief at the source of the infection.

How Does Zidoval Vaginal Gel Work?

Zidoval combats BV by directly addressing the harmful bacteria while allowing beneficial bacteria to thrive. Because it is applied internally, it provides a localised treatment, reducing the risk of side effects compared to oral antibiotics.

How to Use Zidoval Vaginal Gel

Use Zidoval Vaginal Gel exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. This gel is for vaginal use only.

Before Using Zidoval Gel:

  • Wash your hands before and after applying the gel.
  • Always use a new applicator for each dose.
  • Dispose of used applicators immediately in the waste bin.

Recommended Dosage:

  • The usual dose is one 5g application of Zidoval gel inserted into the vagina once daily at bedtime for five consecutive days.
  • This medication is not recommended for children under 18 years old.
  • Zidoval is generally not advised for use in elderly patients.

How to Apply Zidoval Vaginal Gel:

  1. Prepare the Applicator:
    • Remove the cap from the tube.
    • Use the pointed end of the cap to pierce the seal.
    • Attach an applicator to the open end of the tube and gently squeeze the tube to fill the applicator with the required 5g dose. The plunger will move as the applicator fills and stop once the correct amount is reached.
    • Detach the applicator and replace the cap on the tube.
  2. Insert the Applicator:
    • Hold the filled applicator by its barrel and gently insert it into the vagina as far as it comfortably goes.
    • Lying on your back with your knees bent may make insertion easier.
  3. Release the Gel:
    • Slowly press the plunger to release the gel into the vagina.
    • Continue pressing until the plunger stops, ensuring the full dose is administered.
    • Remove the applicator and discard it in the waste bin.
  4. Repeat the Process:
    • Use a new applicator each night at bedtime for five consecutive days.
    • If symptoms persist after completing the course, consult your doctor.

Missed Dose or Overuse:

  • If you forget to use Zidoval, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal.
  • Do not use more than prescribed. If you accidentally apply too much, seek medical advice.
  • Complete the full course, even if symptoms improve early, to prevent recurrence.

Who Should Not Use Zidoval Vaginal Gel?

Do Not Use Zidoval Gel If:

  • You are allergic to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole antibiotics.
  • You are allergic to any ingredients in the gel, including parabens.
  • You have a known sensitivity to preservatives such as methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Zidoval is not recommended for individuals under 18 years old.
  • If you have a history of blood disorders or any condition affecting the blood, consult your doctor before use.

Zidoval Vaginal Gel FAQs

1. What is Zidoval gel used for?

Zidoval gel is a treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV). It contains metronidazole, an antibacterial ingredient that kills the bacteria causing BV. The gel is applied inside the vagina and is only available with a prescription. To ensure the infection is completely treated, it's important to follow the full course as prescribed.

2. What is bacterial vaginosis (BV)?

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. Factors like sexual activity or frequent douching can trigger it, but it is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Symptoms of BV include unusual vaginal discharge, itching, and a strong odor. BV can be treated effectively, but it may come back, so finishing the prescribed treatment is important.

3. How does Zidoval BV gel work?

Zidoval contains metronidazole, which targets anaerobic bacteria responsible for BV. By disrupting the bacterial DNA, it prevents the bacteria from multiplying. The gel is used for five consecutive days to treat the infection.

4. Can I drink alcohol while using Zidoval gel?

It’s recommended to avoid alcohol during the treatment and for 24 hours after completing it. Drinking alcohol may cause side effects like dizziness, nausea, and headaches, though these are less common with the gel compared to oral metronidazole tablets.

5. Can I use Zidoval gel while menstruating?

Yes, you can still use Zidoval gel while on your period. However, it's best to avoid tampons and use unscented sanitary pads. Be sure to complete the treatment as prescribed, even if you are menstruating.

6. What are the alternatives to Zidoval gel for treating BV?

Alternative treatments for bacterial vaginosis include:

  • Metronidazole tablets: Oral antibiotics for BV.
  • Dalacin 2% vaginal cream: A topical antibiotic for those who cannot use metronidazole.
  • Balance Activ vaginal gel: Helps restore the vagina's natural pH balance.

7. What’s the difference between Zidoval gel, Metrogel, and Rozex?

Zidoval, Metrogel, and Rozex all contain metronidazole, but they serve different purposes. Zidoval is used for treating BV, while Metrogel and Rozex are used for treating rosacea. These should not be used interchangeably.

8. How do I use Zidoval gel?

Zidoval gel should be applied as directed by your doctor. Typically, a 5g dose is used once daily at bedtime for five days. Ensure you follow the hygiene instructions carefully and use a new applicator for each dose. If you miss a dose, continue with the next dose as usual—do not double dose.

9. What are the common side effects of Zidoval gel?

Common side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vaginal thrush
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic discomfort
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unpleasant taste or a strange feeling on the tongue

10. What should I do if I experience side effects or if my symptoms persist?

If you experience side effects or if symptoms do not improve after completing the full course, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

11. Are there any warnings or interactions with Zidoval gel?

Zidoval gel should not be used if you are allergic to metronidazole, nitroimidazole antibacterials, or parabens. Inform your doctor if you have blood disorders, vaginal thrush, or are undergoing blood tests. Zidoval gel may interact with medications like warfarin, cyclosporin, 5-fluorouracil, and lithium. Avoid alcohol during treatment and consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

12. Can I drink alcohol while using Zidoval Gel?

It’s best to avoid alcohol while using Zidoval Gel and for 24 hours after finishing the treatment. Alcohol may cause side effects like nausea, dizziness, and headaches, although these are less likely with the gel compared to oral metronidazole.

13. What should I do if I forget to use Zidoval Gel?

If you miss an application, continue with your regular dose at bedtime. Do not apply extra gel to make up for a missed dose.

14. Can I use Zidoval Gel if I am pregnant?

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor before using Zidoval Gel. While there is no clear restriction for use during pregnancy, getting medical advice is important to ensure the treatment is safe for both you and your baby.

15. Is Zidoval Gel safe to use while breastfeeding?

If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Zidoval Gel. Although metronidazole is generally considered safe for short-term use during breastfeeding, it's important to get professional advice to ensure there are no risks for your baby.

16. Can I have sex after using Zidoval Gel?

It’s best to avoid sexual intercourse during treatment and while the infection is active. Sexual activity might irritate the vaginal area or interfere with the gel’s effectiveness. Wait until the infection has cleared and symptoms are gone before resuming sexual activity.

  • Zidoval Vaginal Gel: Each gram contains 7.5 mg of metronidazole.
