What you should know about migraine treatments

A migraine is a neurological condition characterized by intense, throbbing headaches often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Unlike regular headaches, migraines can last for hours or even days and are typically more debilitating.

Migraine triggers vary from person to person but can include stress, certain foods and drinks (like chocolate, cheese, caffeine, and alcohol), hormonal changes, lack of sleep, dehydration, bright lights, and strong smells. Keeping a migraine diary can help identify your specific triggers.

Common symptoms include a severe, throbbing headache on one side of the head, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances such as flashing lights or blind spots (known as aura).

Migraines are diagnosed based on your medical history, the pattern of your headaches, and your symptoms. Your doctor may recommend keeping a headache diary and might conduct tests to rule out other conditions if necessary.

Vydura is the brand name for a medication known as rimegepant, which is used to treat migraines. Rimegepant belongs to a class of drugs called CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the activity of CGRP, a substance in the brain that is believed to play a key role in causing migraine headaches.

Vydura can be used both as an acute treatment for relieving migraine symptoms once they start and as a preventive treatment to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks. It is taken orally, usually in the form of a dissolvable tablet, which makes it convenient for use during a migraine attack.

The medication is particularly beneficial for people who do not respond well to traditional migraine treatments like triptans or for those who cannot take such medications due to side effects or other health conditions.

As with any medication, it is important to use Vydura as prescribed by a healthcare professional and to be aware of potential side effects, which can include nausea, indigestion, or allergic reactions.

You should seek medical attention if you experience sudden, severe headaches, changes in your migraine pattern, headaches with neurological symptoms (like vision changes or numbness), or headaches following a head injury. These could be signs of a more serious condition.

While there is no cure for migraines, they can often be managed and sometimes prevented with a combination of medication, lifestyle changes, and avoiding known triggers. Preventive medications may be prescribed for those with frequent or severe migraines.

Yes, lifestyle changes such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule, staying hydrated, eating balanced meals, managing stress, and avoiding known triggers can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. Regular exercise and relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation may also be beneficial.

Migraine Treatment and Management at Courierpharmacy

Migraines are far more than simple headaches. They are severe neurological conditions that cause intense pain, nausea, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. These symptoms can greatly disrupt daily life and lower your overall quality of life. At Courierpharmacy, we understand the struggles of living with migraines and are committed to helping you discover the right treatments to manage your symptoms and regain control.

What is a Migraine?

A migraine is a complex disorder characterized by intense, pulsating head pain, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and heightened sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are more common in women, affecting about 1 in 5 compared to 1 in 15 men. Although they often begin in early adulthood, the frequency and severity of migraines can change over time, sometimes easing with age. The condition can be highly disruptive, making everyday activities difficult.

Migraines differ from person to person. Some individuals may suffer several attacks a week that last for days, while others experience less frequent, milder episodes. Knowing the type of migraine you have is key to choosing an effective treatment strategy.

There are two main types of migraines:

  • Migraine with aura: Also known as classic migraine, this type includes sensory disturbances such as visual changes (e.g., blind spots or flashing lights) or tingling sensations before the headache begins.
  • Migraine without aura: The most common form, where the migraine occurs without any prior warning signs.

There are also less common forms:

  • Chronic migraine: Occurs 15 or more days per month.
  • Migraine with brainstem aura: A rare form that may include symptoms like slurred speech and tingling.
  • Vestibular migraine: Associated with balance issues and dizziness.
  • Hemiplegic migraine: A rare type involving temporary weakness on one side of the body.

Causes and Triggers of Migraines

While the exact cause of migraines remains unclear, they are believed to result from abnormal brain activity that affects nerve signals, chemical balances, and blood vessels. Genetics may play a role, making some individuals more prone to migraines when exposed to triggers.

Common migraine triggers include:

  • Emotional factors such as stress, anxiety, excitement, and depression
  • Physical factors like fatigue, poor posture, neck or shoulder tension, and low blood sugar
  • Dietary triggers such as irregular meals, dehydration, caffeine, alcohol, and certain foods like chocolate or cheese
  • Environmental factors including bright or flickering lights, strong smells, loud noises, and weather changes
  • Hormonal fluctuations, especially during menstruation

What Are the Symptoms of a Migraine?

Migraines typically progress through several stages, although not everyone experiences every phase:

  • Premonitory Stage (Prodrome): Up to 24 hours before the migraine, you may experience fatigue, food cravings, mood changes, thirst, or neck stiffness.
  • Aura Stage: For those who experience aura, symptoms such as visual disturbances (spots, sparkles, zigzag lines), numbness, tingling, weakness, dizziness, or changes in speech and hearing may occur up to 60 minutes before the headache.
  • Headache Stage: Characterized by severe, throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head, along with nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, smell, and movement.
  • Resolution Stage: The migraine gradually subsides over several hours or days, sometimes ending suddenly after vomiting or sleep.
  • Recovery/Postdrome Stage: Following the attack, you may feel drained or, in some cases, experience a burst of energy. This recovery phase can last for days.

Diagnosing Migraines

Your GP will typically diagnose migraines by reviewing your headache patterns, symptoms, and treatment responses. Keeping a migraine diary to track triggers, symptoms, and the effectiveness of treatments can be very helpful.

Treatment Options for Migraines

Although there is no cure for migraines, several treatments can help manage the symptoms and reduce the frequency of attacks:

  • Painkillers: Over-the-counter medications like paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin can be effective if taken early. For more severe pain, stronger painkillers containing codeine (e.g., Solpadeine or Nurofen Plus) may be necessary.
  • Triptans: Medications such as Sumatriptan, Rizatriptan, or Almotriptan work by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain to relieve pain. Triptans are available in tablet, nasal spray, and injection forms.
  • Anti-Sickness Treatments: Medications like Buccastem help relieve nausea and vomiting, especially if taken early in the migraine attack.

Preventing Migraines

Prevention is essential for those who experience frequent migraines. Identifying and avoiding triggers can reduce the number of migraine days. If you suffer more than five migraine days per month, your GP may recommend preventive medications such as beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, or CGRP monoclonal antibodies. Recently, a new class of medication called CGRP mAbs has been developed specifically for migraine prevention by targeting the calcitonin gene-related peptide involved in triggering migraines.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

Certain red flags indicate that your migraine symptoms may signal a more serious condition. Seek immediate medical help if you experience:

  • A sudden, extremely severe headache (often described as the “worst headache of your life”)
  • A sudden change in headache pattern, frequency, or intensity, particularly if you are over 50
  • Neurological symptoms such as double vision, slurred speech, weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty walking, or confusion
  • A headache accompanied by fever, neck stiffness, or rash, which could indicate meningitis
  • A headache after a head injury that worsens over time
  • Persistent headaches lasting more than 72 hours or headaches that do not respond to treatment
  • Headaches accompanied by seizures, vision changes, fainting, or loss of consciousness
