What are Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets?

Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets are used to treat acute migraine attacks. They contain rizatriptan, which belongs to a group of medications known as triptans. Triptans help relieve migraine symptoms by targeting serotonin receptors in the brain.

Key Information:

  • Form and Use: These tablets dissolve quickly in your mouth, so there’s no need for water. This makes them ideal for people who find it hard to swallow regular tablets.
  • How It Works: Rizatriptan works by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain and reducing inflammation, which helps relieve severe headaches, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound during a migraine.
  • When to Use: Take the tablet as soon as you notice a migraine coming on. Rizatriptan is effective at relieving symptoms during an attack but is not meant to prevent migraines from occurring.

Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets are available by prescription and are suitable for adults experiencing migraines. You can purchase them online from courierpharmacy.co.uk after completing the online consultation form.

What is the active ingredient in Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets?

Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets contain the active ingredient Rizatriptan benzoate 10 mg.

What are Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets used for?

Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets are used to treat acute migraine attacks. They help relieve common migraine symptoms such as:

  • Intense headache or throbbing pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and sound

The active ingredient in these tablets, rizatriptan, is part of a group of medications called triptans. Triptans target serotonin receptors in the brain, which helps narrow blood vessels and reduce the pain and other symptoms of a migraine.

These orodispersible tablets are designed to dissolve quickly in the mouth, making them easy to take when you need fast relief, even without water. They are meant for use during a migraine attack and are not intended for migraine prevention.

You can order Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets from courierpharmacy.co.uk after completing an online consultation form.

How do Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets work?

Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets work by targeting specific receptors in the brain to relieve migraine symptoms. Here’s how they work:

  • Serotonin Receptor Activation: Rizatriptan is a triptan medication that activates serotonin receptors (5-HT1B and 5-HT1D) in the brain.
  • Vasoconstriction: By activating these receptors, rizatriptan helps narrow the dilated blood vessels in the brain that contribute to migraine pain.
  • Pain Relief: This narrowing reduces pressure and inflammation, which helps decrease the intensity of the headache and alleviates other symptoms like nausea, light sensitivity, and sound sensitivity.
  • Rapid Dissolution: The orodispersible tablet quickly dissolves on the tongue without needing water, allowing for faster absorption and quicker relief during a migraine attack.

Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets work best when taken at the start of a migraine. They provide relief for the current attack but are not intended to prevent future migraines.

You can buy Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets online from courierpharmacy.co.uk after completing an online consultation form.

How to take Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets

Rizatriptan is prescribed to treat acute migraine attacks. It should be taken at the first sign of a migraine and is not intended to prevent future migraines.

Always follow the instructions provided by your doctor when taking Rizatriptan. If you are unsure about any part of its use, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage Instructions:

  • The recommended dose is 10 mg.
  • Rizatriptan comes in an orodispersible tablet that dissolves in your mouth.
  • Remove the tablet from the blister pack with dry hands and place it on your tongue. It will dissolve on its own and can be swallowed with saliva.
  • This method is useful if you can’t drink water or want to avoid nausea or vomiting that sometimes occurs with tablets taken with water.

Special Considerations:

  • If you are taking propranolol or have kidney or liver issues, take the 5 mg dose of Rizatriptan.
  • Maintain a gap of at least 2 hours between taking propranolol and Rizatriptan, and do not exceed 2 doses within a 24-hour period.

If Migraine Returns Within 24 Hours:

  • If symptoms return within 24 hours, you may take another dose of Rizatriptan, but make sure to wait at least 2 hours between doses.
  • If the first dose doesn’t relieve the migraine, do not take a second dose for the same attack. Rizatriptan may work during a future migraine episode.

Maximum Dosage:

  • Do not take more than 2 doses (20 mg total) in a 24-hour period.
  • Always ensure there is at least a 2-hour gap between doses.

Overdose:

If you accidentally take more Rizatriptan than prescribed, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Take the medicine pack with you. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, fainting, or a slow heart rate.

If you have any further questions about using Rizatriptan, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

You can purchase Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets online from courierpharmacy.co.uk after completing an online consultation form.

Who should not take Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets?

Rizatriptan should not be taken by anyone who:

  • Has moderate to severe high blood pressure, or mild high blood pressure that is not controlled by medication.
  • Has a history of heart problems, including heart attack, angina (chest pain), or other heart-related issues.
  • Suffers from severe liver or kidney problems.
  • Has had a stroke (cerebrovascular accident) or a mini-stroke (transient ischemic attack).
  • Experiences reduced blood flow to the limbs due to blocked arteries (peripheral vascular disease).

  • Is using ergotamine-type medications, such as ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, or methysergide, for migraine treatment or prevention.
  • Is taking other triptans, such as sumatriptan, naratriptan, or zolmitriptan, for migraine treatment.

If you are unsure whether any of these conditions apply to you, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Rizatriptan.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, nicotine use, a family history of heart disease, are a man over 40, or a post-menopausal woman.

  • Notify your doctor if you’ve had allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, which may cause breathing or swallowing difficulties (angioedema).
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like sertraline, escitalopram, or fluoxetine, or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) like venlafaxine or duloxetine.
  • Seek medical advice if you’ve had brief symptoms, including chest pain and tightness.

Important Notes:

  • Overuse of Rizatriptan may lead to chronic headaches. If this occurs, consult your doctor, as you may need to stop using the medication.
  • Rizatriptan is for treating migraine attacks only, not for other types of headaches or more serious conditions.

Children and Adolescents:

  • Rizatriptan is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years due to limited experience with this age group.

Patients Over 65 Years:

  • There is limited information on the safety and effectiveness of Rizatriptan in individuals over 65 years of age.

Food and Drink:

  • Rizatriptan may take longer to work if taken after food. It is ideally taken on an empty stomach, though it can still be effective if taken after eating.

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and Fertility:

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Rizatriptan.
  • Data suggests no increased risk of birth defects during the first trimester of pregnancy, but the effects of taking Rizatriptan later in pregnancy are not fully known.
  • If breastfeeding, consider postponing for 12 hours after treatment to avoid passing the medicine to your baby.

Driving and Using Machines:

  • Rizatriptan may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If affected, avoid driving or operating machinery.

Rizatriptan 10mg Orodispersible Tablets FAQs

What is Rizatriptan and what is it used for?

Rizatriptan, commonly known by its brand name Maxalt Wafers, is a medication used to treat migraines. It belongs to a class of drugs called 5HT1 agonists, which help reduce swelling of blood vessels in the brain by targeting serotonin receptors. Rizatriptan 10mg comes in orodispersible tablets that dissolve quickly on your tongue, making it ideal for people who have difficulty swallowing large tablets.

What is a migraine?

Migraines are a type of headache that is often severe and accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, light sensitivity, and vomiting. Though the exact cause is not fully understood, they are believed to be related to changes in brain chemicals. Certain foods or drinks can trigger migraines, and they are common, especially in women. In some cases, migraines can run in families. Some people may experience warning signs known as an aura before the migraine starts.

How does Rizatriptan work?

Rizatriptan works by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain. This helps relieve the headache that is characteristic of migraines. It is most effective when taken at the first signs of a migraine. It’s important not to use other triptans or ergotamine-based treatments while taking Rizatriptan.

Are there alternatives to Rizatriptan?

Yes, there are several alternatives available for treating migraines. At courierpharmacy.co.uk, you can find both prescription and over-the-counter options. Some alternatives your doctor may recommend include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like naproxen. Other over-the-counter remedies include paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, and Migraleve.

How should I take Rizatriptan?

Take Rizatriptan as soon as you notice the onset of a migraine. Place one tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve completely. If the medication does not work, wait at least 2 hours before taking a second dose. You should not exceed 2 tablets in a 24-hour period. If you are taking propranolol or have liver or kidney issues, use the 5mg dose and maintain a 2-hour gap between taking Rizatriptan and propranolol.

What warnings should I be aware of?

Do not take Rizatriptan if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, have high blood pressure, a history of heart attack or stroke, severe liver or kidney problems, or if you are taking MAO inhibitors. If you have a high risk for heart disease, issues with heart rhythm, take St. John's Wort, or are on SSRIs or SNRIs, consult your doctor before using Rizatriptan. Always read the packaging and Patient Information Leaflet carefully before use.
