What is Sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan is a medication belonging to the triptan class, also called 5-HT1 receptor agonists, specifically used to treat migraine headaches. Migraines are often caused by blood vessels in the brain expanding. Sumatriptan works by narrowing these blood vessels, which helps reduce the headache and other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Sumatriptan is only effective once a migraine starts and does not work to prevent future migraines. It should not be used as a preventive treatment. For the best results, take Sumatriptan as soon as you experience the first signs of a migraine. It is available in different forms, including tablets and nasal spray, to meet various preferences and needs.

You can purchase Sumatriptan online at courierpharmacy.co.uk after completing a simple online consultation form.

What is the Active Ingredient in Sumatriptan?

Each Sumatriptan tablet contains sumatriptan succinate, which is the active ingredient responsible for its effectiveness in treating migraines.

You can purchase Sumatriptan online at courierpharmacy.co.uk after completing an easy online consultation form.

What is Sumatriptan Used For?

Sumatriptan is mainly used to treat acute migraine attacks. It helps relieve the intense headache and other migraine symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Sumatriptan works by narrowing the expanded blood vessels in the brain, which reduces migraine pain.

It’s important to remember that Sumatriptan is not a preventive treatment for migraines. It is designed to manage symptoms once a migraine has started. Sumatriptan is ideal for those who suffer from frequent and severe migraines and need quick relief.

How Does Sumatriptan Work?

Sumatriptan is a medication from the triptan family, also known as 5-HT1 receptor agonists. It works by targeting certain serotonin receptors in the brain. Here’s how it helps:

  • Constriction of Blood Vessels: Migraines often happen due to widened blood vessels in the brain. Sumatriptan binds to serotonin receptors on these blood vessels, causing them to narrow, which helps relieve the migraine pain.
  • Reduction of Inflammation: By affecting serotonin receptors, Sumatriptan also lowers the release of chemicals that cause inflammation, reducing irritation in the brain and easing symptoms.
  • Relief of Migraine Symptoms: As the blood vessels narrow and inflammation decreases, Sumatriptan helps ease the headache and other migraine symptoms, like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Sumatriptan is effective for treating an active migraine attack but does not prevent future migraines or reduce their frequency. It should be used as directed by your doctor for the best results.

Sumatriptan typically starts to work within 30 minutes, so it’s most effective when taken early in a migraine attack. If it doesn’t relieve your symptoms, you might try another triptan like almotriptan (Almogran) or frovatriptan (Migard).

How to Take

  • Take the tablet with water, ideally as soon as you feel a migraine coming on.
  • Do not chew or crush the tablet.
  • If the medication does not work, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Duration of Treatment

  • If the first dose does not provide relief, do not take a second dose for the same migraine. You may take Sumatriptan again for a new migraine attack.
  • If symptoms improve but return after the first dose, you can take another dose, but make sure there is at least 2 hours between doses.
  • Do not exceed 300 mg of Sumatriptan within a 24-hour period.

What to Do If You Take Too Much

  • If you take more Sumatriptan than prescribed, contact your doctor or pharmacist right away. You may experience side effects, such as those listed under "Possible Side Effects."

If You Miss a Dose

  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

For any further questions about using Sumatriptan, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Who Should Not Use Sumatriptan?

Do not take Sumatriptan if you:

  • Are allergic to sumatriptan or any of its ingredients (refer to the patient information leaflet for details).
  • Have heart conditions such as narrowed arteries (ischemic heart disease), chest pain (angina), or have had a heart attack.
  • Suffer from circulation problems in your legs, causing cramp-like pain when walking (peripheral vascular disease).
  • Have had a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
  • Have high blood pressure, unless it is mild and well-controlled.
  • Have severe liver disease.
  • Are taking other migraine treatments that contain ergotamine, similar drugs like methysergide, or other triptans/5-HT1 receptor agonists.
  • Are currently using or have used monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) in the last two weeks.

If any of these conditions apply to you, speak with your doctor before using

What Are the Side Effects of Sumatriptan?

Like all medications, Sumatriptan can cause side effects, but not everyone will experience them. Some side effects might be linked to the migraine itself rather than the medication.

Seek immediate medical help if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, such as:

  • Rash or itchy skin (hives)
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, or throat
  • Feeling faint or collapsing

If these symptoms appear after taking Sumatriptan, stop using the medication and contact your doctor right away.

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Drowsiness or tiredness
  • Dizziness, weakness, or hot flushes
  • A temporary increase in blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle aches

Very Rare Side Effects (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)

  • Changes in liver function. If you are having liver function tests while using Sumatriptan, inform your doctor or nurse.
  • Seizures, tremors, muscle spasms, or neck stiffness
  • Visual issues like flickering, double vision, reduced vision, or even permanent vision problems (sometimes related to the migraine itself)
  • Heart problems, such as abnormal heartbeat, chest pain (angina), or heart attack
  • Raynaud’s phenomenon: a condition causing pale or blue-tinged skin and pain in the fingers, toes, ears, nose, or jaw in response to cold or stress
  • Fainting or low blood pressure
  • Abdominal pain on the left side and bloody diarrhea (ischemic colitis)

Does Sumatriptan Interact with Other Medicines?

It’s important to let your doctor or pharmacist know if you're taking, have recently taken, or plan to take any other medications. Some drugs should not be combined with Sumatriptan, as they could cause harmful effects. Here are some key interactions to be aware of:

Ergotamine and Similar Medications
These medications, used to treat migraines, include methysergide. You should not use Sumatriptan with these drugs. Wait at least 24 hours after stopping ergotamine or similar medications before using Sumatriptan, and avoid taking ergotamine again for at least 6 hours after using Sumatriptan.

Other Triptans/5-HT1 Receptor Agonists
These include drugs like naratriptan, rizatriptan, and zolmitriptan. You should not use Sumatriptan with these medications. Discontinue any of these drugs at least 24 hours before taking Sumatriptan, and avoid using another triptan/5-HT1 receptor agonist for at least 24 hours after using Sumatriptan.

SSRIs and SNRIs
These are types of antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Combining Sumatriptan with these drugs may lead to serotonin syndrome, which can cause symptoms like restlessness, confusion, excessive sweating, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, and muscle spasms. Seek immediate medical advice if you experience any of these symptoms.

MAOIs
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) used for depression should not be taken with Sumatriptan if they have been used within the past 2 weeks.

St. John’s Wort
This herbal supplement can increase the risk of side effects when used with Sumatriptan.

If you have any questions or concerns about potential interactions with other medications, always consult your healthcare provider.

Sumatriptan FAQs

What are triptans used for in migraine relief?
Triptans are medications specifically used to treat migraines. They work by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and stabilizing certain brain chemicals. If regular painkillers don’t work, triptans like Sumatriptan can be a helpful alternative. Sumatriptan is available as a generic option or under the brand name Imigran.

How should Sumatriptan be taken for the best results?
For the best results, take Sumatriptan as soon as you notice migraine symptoms. The medication usually starts working within 30 minutes. If Sumatriptan does not relieve your migraine, you may want to try other triptans such as almotriptan (Almogran) or frovatriptan (Migard).

What is the difference between generic Sumatriptan and Imigran?
Both generic Sumatriptan and the branded version Imigran contain the same active ingredient, sumatriptan succinate. The main difference is cost: generic versions are typically more affordable, but both options are equally effective.

How is Sumatriptan prescribed and what doses are available?
Sumatriptan is a prescription medication and comes in two strengths: 50mg and 100mg. The 50mg dose works for most people, while the 100mg dose is used for more severe migraines or if the lower dose is not effective. Your doctor will help determine the right dose for your needs.

What other migraine relief medications are available?
Aside from Sumatriptan, there are other options for migraine relief, including other triptans like Migard (frovatriptan) 2.5mg tablets, Imigran (sumatriptan) nasal sprays (10mg & 20mg), and wafer melts such as Maxalt Melt (rizatriptan) 10mg.

What over-the-counter options are available for migraines?
For migraine pain and nausea, you can consider over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin, and Buccastem M for nausea.

What are the common side effects of Sumatriptan?
Common side effects of Sumatriptan include chest, throat, or body pressure, unusual sensations such as numbness, tingling, warmth or cold, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, and temporary increases in blood pressure. These effects are usually short-term but should be monitored.

What should I do if I experience severe side effects from Sumatriptan?
If you experience severe or persistent side effects, like intense chest pain, seek immediate medical help. Report any pain or tightness in the chest to a healthcare provider if it doesn’t go away quickly.

What are the warnings associated with Sumatriptan?
Sumatriptan should not be used if you have had a stroke, severe circulation issues, or heart conditions like angina or heart attacks. It’s also not recommended for those with high blood pressure or severe liver dysfunction. Before using Sumatriptan, speak to your doctor if you are a heavy smoker, a man over 40, or a postmenopausal woman.

When should I avoid using Sumatriptan?
You should avoid Sumatriptan if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, have high blood pressure, severe liver impairment, or are currently taking ergotamine, similar medications, or MAO inhibitors.
