What is Syndol?

Syndol is a pain relief medication that comes in film-coated tablets. It contains four active ingredients: caffeine, codeine phosphate, doxylamine succinate, and paracetamol.

  • Paracetamol: Reduces pain and lowers fever.
  • Codeine Phosphate: Provides additional pain relief.
  • Doxylamine Succinate: Works as an antihistamine.
  • Caffeine: A mild stimulant that enhances pain relief effects.

You can purchase Syndol online at CourierPharmacy.co.uk after completing the online consultation form.

What are the active ingredients in Syndol?

Each Syndol tablet contains the following active ingredients:

  • Paracetamol: 450mg – a painkiller that also helps reduce fever.
  • Codeine Phosphate: 10mg – an opioid pain reliever.
  • Doxylamine Succinate: 5mg – an antihistamine that also relieves muscle tension.
  • Caffeine: 30mg – a mild stimulant that enhances pain relief effects.

You can buy Syndol online at CourierPharmacy.co.uk after completing the online consultation form.

What is Syndol used for?

Syndol is designed for short-term relief of moderate pain when common painkillers like paracetamol, ibuprofen, or aspirin aren’t effective. It helps manage a range of pain types, such as:

  • Headaches (including tension and muscle contraction headaches)
  • Migraines
  • Neuralgia (nerve pain)
  • Period pain
  • Toothache and other dental pain
  • Muscular and rheumatic aches
  • Post-surgery or dental procedure pain

Syndol can be used by children over 12 years of age to relieve moderate pain that other painkillers haven’t managed. However, it is not recommended for children under 18 who have had tonsil or adenoid surgery due to Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome.

You can purchase Syndol online at CourierPharmacy.co.uk after completing an online consultation form.

How does Syndol work?

Syndol tablets work by combining multiple active ingredients to provide fast and effective pain relief. Here's how each ingredient contributes:

  • Paracetamol: A well-known pain reliever, it helps reduce mild to moderate pain and fever. It works by lowering the production of prostaglandins, chemicals in the brain and spinal cord that trigger pain sensations. This makes the pain feel less intense.

  • Codeine: This opioid painkiller is stronger than paracetamol and helps block pain signals. It mimics the body’s natural painkillers, endorphins, to reduce the sensation of pain, even though the cause of pain remains.

  • Caffeine: A mild stimulant, caffeine boosts the pain-relieving effects of paracetamol and helps reduce the drowsiness caused by codeine.

Syndol Original Tablets also contain Doxylamine, a sedating antihistamine that acts as a muscle relaxant. This ingredient helps relieve tension headaches and muscle pain by relaxing tight muscles.

How to take Syndol

Always follow your doctor or pharmacist's instructions when using Syndol. If you are unsure about anything, seek advice from them.

Duration of Use

  • Do not take Syndol for more than 3 days.
  • If you need to use it longer, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Addiction Risk
Syndol contains codeine, which can lead to addiction if used for more than three days. If you stop using it, withdrawal symptoms may occur. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you experience these symptoms.

Dosage Instructions

  • Adults (including elderly):

    • Take 1 or 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain relief.
    • Wait at least 4 hours before taking another dose.
    • Do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours.
    • Consult your doctor if you are elderly or have health concerns, as your dosage may need adjustment.
  • Children aged 16 to 18 years:

    • Take 1 to 2 tablets every 6 hours as needed.
    • Do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours.
  • Children aged 12 to 15 years:

    • Take 1 tablet every 6 hours as needed.
    • Do not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours.
  • Children under 12 years:
Syndol is not safe for children under 12 years old due to the risk of severe breathing problems.

What to do if you take more Syndol than you should
Taking too much Syndol may cause:

  • Pale skin
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Irregular heart rate
  • Kidney pain
If you suspect an overdose, get medical help immediately. Paracetamol overdose can lead to serious liver damage. Take the remaining tablets and packaging with you to the doctor.

What to do if you forget to take Syndol
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s nearly time for your next dose. Don’t take a double dose. Always wait at least 4 hours between doses.

What to do if you stop taking Syndol
Because of the codeine, stopping Syndol suddenly can lead to withdrawal symptoms. If you experience any, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

For more information and to purchase Syndol online, visit CourierPharmacy.co.uk and complete the online consultation form.

Who should not take Syndol?

Important Information Before You Take Syndol

Addiction Warning
Syndol contains codeine, which can be addictive if used for more than 3 days. If you stop using it after this period, withdrawal symptoms may occur.

Headache Warning
Using Syndol for headache treatment for more than 3 days can potentially make the headaches worse.

Do Not Take Syndol If:

  • You are allergic to codeine, paracetamol, doxylamine succinate, caffeine, or any other ingredients in this medication (check section 6 for the full list). Signs of an allergy include skin rashes, difficulty breathing, or swelling in the face, throat, tongue, or limbs.
  • You are experiencing an asthma attack or have severe breathing problems.
  • You’ve recently had a head injury.
  • You’ve been diagnosed with increased pressure in your head, causing symptoms such as headaches, vomiting, and blurred vision.
  • You’ve recently had surgery on your liver, gallbladder, or bile ducts.
  • You are at risk of a blocked intestine (paralytic ileus).
  • You are already taking medications containing codeine or paracetamol.
  • You’ve taken Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), such as selegiline or moclobemide, within the past 14 days.
  • You are an alcoholic.
  • The patient is under 12 years old.
  • You are under 18 years old and have had tonsil or adenoid surgery due to Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome.
  • You metabolize codeine into morphine too quickly.
  • You are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

Warnings and Precautions

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Syndol if:

  • You have liver, kidney, thyroid, or heart issues, or if you are elderly or in a weakened condition.
  • You have high blood pressure, prostate issues, digestive problems (e.g., peptic ulcers), hormonal disorders, or difficulty passing urine.

  • You have a history of mood disorders, alcohol or drug abuse, or are under psychiatric treatment.
  • You are taking benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam, lorazepam).

Codeine and Morphine Metabolism Codeine is converted to morphine in your liver, which provides pain relief. Some people process codeine differently:

  • Some may not produce enough morphine, leading to poor pain relief.
  • Others may produce too much morphine, risking serious side effects.
If you experience any of the following, stop taking Syndol and seek immediate medical help:
  • Slow or shallow breathing
  • Confusion, drowsiness, or small pupils
  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation, or loss of appetite

Taking Syndol with Food and Drink Avoid drinking alcohol while using Syndol.

Post-Surgery Use in Children
Do not use codeine for pain relief in children or adolescents who have had their tonsils or adenoids removed due to Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome.

Children with Breathing Problems
Codeine is not recommended for children with breathing difficulties, as they are at higher risk for morphine toxicity.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Before taking Syndol, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
Do not take Syndol if:

  • You are in the last three months of pregnancy.
  • You are in labor.
  • You are breastfeeding, as codeine and morphine can pass into breast milk.

Driving and Using Machines Syndol may cause drowsiness or dizziness, which can affect your ability to drive or operate machinery safely.
Do not drive until you are sure how the medicine affects you.

Does Syndol interact with other medicines?

Other Medicines and Syndol

Before taking Syndol, it's important to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you're currently taking any other medications, including those purchased without a prescription or herbal remedies. This is crucial because Syndol can interact with other medicines, potentially affecting how they work or how Syndol works.

While taking Syndol, avoid using other medications that contain paracetamol. This includes certain painkillers, cough and cold remedies, and a variety of medicines available both with a prescription and over the counter.

Do not take Syndol if you are using any of the following medications:

  • MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) for depression, or if you have taken them in the last two weeks. Examples include moclobemide, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using or have recently used any of the following:

  • Medications that cause drowsiness or sleepiness (CNS depressants), such as barbiturates, anesthetics, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, benzodiazepines, antipsychotics, or tricyclic antidepressants.
  • Medications for high blood pressure (diuretics and antihypertensives).
  • Antidepressants for treating depression.
  • Antipsychotic medications for mental health conditions.
  • Antimuscarinics, such as atropine or hyoscine.
  • Neuromuscular blockers, such as tubocurarine.
  • Blood thinners, such as warfarin.
  • Medications for nausea, such as metoclopramide or domperidone.
  • Medications for lowering cholesterol, such as colestyramine.
  • Hydroxyzine for treating anxiety or tension.
  • Mexiletine for irregular heartbeat.
  • Kaolin or loperamide for diarrhea.
  • Naloxone for narcotic overdose treatment.
  • Naltrexone for drug or alcohol dependence programs.
  • Cimetidine for stomach ulcers.
  • Cisapride for gastroesophageal reflux disease.
  • Quinidine for irregular heart rhythms.
  • Oral contraceptive pills.

If you're unsure whether any of the above applies to you, consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Syndol.

Important Warning:

Taking opioids alongside benzodiazepines can increase the risk of drowsiness, breathing problems (respiratory depression), and even coma, which may be life-threatening. You should only take these medications together if they are prescribed by your doctor. Always follow your doctor’s dosage instructions carefully. It can be helpful to inform friends or family to monitor for signs of these effects. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Syndol FAQs

What are Syndol Tablets?

Syndol Tablets are designed to provide fast, short-term relief from pain when common over-the-counter painkillers, like paracetamol, are not enough. Syndol targets mild to moderate pain caused by various conditions, including headaches, migraines, nerve pain, period pain, toothache, and muscle aches. For those struggling with pain that standard painkillers can't manage, Syndol offers a stronger solution for short-term use.

What are Syndol Tablets used for?

Syndol Tablets are used for short-term relief from acute pain, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Toothache
  • Nerve pain
  • Period pain
  • Muscle pain

Syndol comes in two types:

  • Syndol Headache Relief Tablets: Contain paracetamol, codeine, and caffeine to target headaches and migraines.
  • Syndol Original Pain Relief Tablets: Contain paracetamol, codeine, caffeine, and doxylamine, which helps reduce muscle pain and tension headaches.

Syndol should only be used when other pain relief options, like paracetamol or ibuprofen, do not provide enough relief, and should not be used for more than three days due to the risk of addiction.

How does Syndol work?

Syndol Headache Relief Tablets contain three active ingredients—paracetamol, codeine, and caffeine—working together for quick pain relief. Syndol Original includes a fourth ingredient, doxylamine, for muscle relaxation.

  • Paracetamol helps reduce pain and fever by lowering the production of pain-causing chemicals in the brain and spinal cord.
  • Codeine is an opioid that blocks pain signals to the brain by mimicking natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body.
  • Caffeine boosts the pain-relieving effects of paracetamol and helps counteract the drowsiness caused by codeine.
  • Doxylamine in Syndol Original is an antihistamine that also works as a muscle relaxant to ease muscle pain and tension.

What are the alternatives to Syndol Tablets?

If you're looking for non-prescription alternatives for pain relief, consider:

  • Ibuprofen
  • Paracetamol
  • Aspirin
  • Topical treatments like ibuprofen gel

For migraines, Migraleve Yellow and Migraleve Pink may help, as they target both pain relief and nausea.

If Syndol does not relieve your pain within three days, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Can I take Syndol Tablets with paracetamol?

No, you should not take Syndol with other products containing paracetamol as this could lead to a dangerous overdose, potentially causing liver and kidney damage. Always check the ingredients of any other medications you are taking with Syndol. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist.

What are the ingredients in Syndol Tablets?

  • Syndol Headache Relief Tablets: Paracetamol 500mg, Caffeine 30mg, Codeine Phosphate 8mg.
  • Syndol Original Tablets: Includes Doxylamine Succinate 5mg.

Additional ingredients include povidone, maize starch, methylcellulose, talc, purified water, and calcium stearate.

What should I be aware of before taking Syndol Tablets?

Do not take Syndol if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients.
  • You have asthma, severe respiratory issues, alcoholism, or have recently undergone bile duct surgery.
  • You have paralytic ileus (non-functioning bowel) or a recent head injury.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Consult your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, an enlarged prostate, low blood pressure, bowel issues, or an underactive thyroid.

Can Syndol interact with other medicines?

Yes, Syndol can interact with other medications. Do not take it if you are currently on or have recently used:

  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or other antidepressants.

Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Syndol alongside other medications, whether prescribed or over-the-counter.

Can I drive while taking Syndol?

Syndol Tablets may cause drowsiness. If you feel drowsy, do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or consume alcohol.
