What is Trimethoprim 200mg?

Trimethoprim is an antibiotic commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections, particularly bladder infections (cystitis) and urinary tract infections (UTIs). It is recognized as an essential medication by the World Health Organization and is available only with a prescription, meaning it cannot be purchased over the counter.

Trimethoprim is highly effective in treating cystitis. However, in certain parts of the UK, there has been growing resistance to this antibiotic. In these cases, you may have been treated with a different antibiotic, such as nitrofurantoin. If nitrofurantoin wasn’t suitable for you or caused side effects, Trimethoprim can be a helpful alternative for treating your UTI.

What is the Active Ingredient in Trimethoprim 200mg?

Each Trimethoprim 200mg tablet contains 200mg of the active ingredient, Trimethoprim. This antibiotic works to treat bacterial infections, including bladder and urinary tract infections.

What is Trimethoprim 200mg Used For?

Trimethoprim is an antibiotic that treats bacterial infections, particularly bladder infections (cystitis) and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Use of Trimethoprim in Cystitis

Cystitis is a bladder inflammation caused by bacteria. Common symptoms of cystitis include:

  • Frequent need to urinate
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Discomfort in the lower abdomen

How Does Trimethoprim 200mg Work?

Trimethoprim 200mg is an antibiotic that helps treat bacterial infections by stopping the growth of bacteria. Here's how it works:

Mechanism of Action:

  • Inhibiting Folic Acid Production: Bacteria need folic acid to produce DNA, RNA, and proteins for growth and reproduction. Trimethoprim blocks the production of folic acid by targeting an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase.
  • Bacterial Cell Death: By stopping the enzyme from converting dihydrofolic acid to the form of folic acid bacteria need, trimethoprim prevents bacteria from replicating and surviving, leading to their death.

Effectiveness:

  • Bacteriostatic: At lower doses, trimethoprim prevents bacteria from multiplying.
  • Bactericidal: At higher doses, trimethoprim kills bacteria directly.

Use in Treating Cystitis and UTIs:

  • Targeted Bacteria: Trimethoprim is effective against common bacteria causing urinary tract infections (UTIs), like Escherichia coli (E. coli).
  • Symptom Relief: It helps reduce symptoms of UTIs, such as painful urination, frequent urination, and burning sensations.

How Do You Take Trimethoprim 200mg?

For uncomplicated cystitis, the NHS typically recommends taking Trimethoprim 200mg tablets twice a day, every 12 hours, for the full course of treatment. This is usually a 3-day course, though a 7-day course may also be prescribed.

Dosage Instructions:

  • Take one 200mg tablet twice a day, 12 hours apart.
  • Finish the entire prescribed course, even if symptoms improve.
  • Start taking Trimethoprim as soon as you notice cystitis symptoms.

If you are prescribed other antibiotics such as nitrofurantoin, quinolones, or amoxicillin, consult your healthcare provider to find out the best treatment for your UTI.

Who Should Not Take Trimethoprim 200mg?

Before taking Trimethoprim, carefully read the Patient Information Leaflet included with your medication.

You should avoid taking Trimethoprim if:

  • You are allergic to trimethoprim.
  • You have kidney or liver problems.
  • You have a blood disorder, such as folate deficiency.
  • You have hyperkalemia (high potassium levels).
  • You have galactose intolerance, complete lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

If Trimethoprim causes anemia, your doctor may recommend folic acid to treat it, although this is rare with a short course.

Trimethoprim During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Trimethoprim is not recommended during pregnancy. It should only be used while breastfeeding under your doctor’s guidance.

Does Trimethoprim 200mg Interact with Any Medicines?

Trimethoprim 200mg is generally safe to use alongside most other medications. However, it may interact with certain drugs, so it's important to avoid taking Trimethoprim if you are currently using any of the following:

  • ACE inhibitors (e.g., ramipril)
  • Azathioprine
  • Cyclosporin
  • Dapsone
  • Digoxin
  • Eplerenone
  • Heparin
  • Mercaptopurine
  • Methotrexate
  • Phenytoin
  • Procainamide
  • Pyrimethamine
  • Repaglinide
  • Rifampicin

Make sure to consult your doctor or healthcare provider before starting Trimethoprim if you are taking any of these medications.
