What is Chlorphenamine?

Chlorphenamine is a sedating antihistamine that helps relieve symptoms of allergies, including hay fever, pet allergies, and skin reactions. It works by blocking histamine, the chemical responsible for allergic symptoms like sneezing, itching, and runny nose.

This medication is available in both tablet and oral solution forms, making it a convenient option for adults and children. Due to its sedative properties, chlorphenamine is particularly useful for nighttime allergy relief, helping to reduce discomfort while promoting restful sleep.

Who Can Take Chlorphenamine?

  • Tablets: Suitable for adults and children over 6 years old
  • Oral Solution: Suitable for children over 1 year old

What is Chlorphenamine Used For?

Chlorphenamine is effective in treating a variety of allergic conditions, including:

  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis) – Reduces sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes caused by pollen
  • Pet allergies – Relieves symptoms triggered by fur, dander, and saliva
  • Skin allergies (urticaria & hives) – Soothes itchy rashes, swelling, and irritation
  • Insect bites & stings – Helps reduce itching and swelling
  • Food allergies – Manages mild allergic reactions to certain foods
  • Cold-related symptoms – Used in some cold and flu treatments to reduce runny nose and sneezing

How Does Chlorphenamine Work?

Chlorphenamine belongs to the first-generation antihistamine group, which means it works by blocking histamine receptors in the body. When allergens like pollen or pet hair enter the body, histamine is released, causing inflammation, itching, and other allergic reactions. By preventing histamine from binding to its receptors, chlorphenamine reduces these symptoms.

Unlike non-drowsy antihistamines, chlorphenamine crosses into the brain, which can cause drowsiness. While this makes it less suitable for daytime use, it is often preferred for nighttime relief, helping those with allergies to sleep better.

Chlorphenamine Dosage
