What is Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that helps relieve allergy symptoms such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and hives (urticaria). It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic reactions like itching, sneezing, a runny nose, and watery eyes.

As a second-generation antihistamine, Fexofenadine is less likely to cause drowsiness compared to older antihistamines like diphenhydramine.

What is the active ingredient in Fexofenadine?

The active ingredient in Fexofenadine tablets is:

  • Fexofenadine hydrochloride (120mg or 180mg)

What is Fexofenadine used for?

Fexofenadine tablets are commonly used to relieve symptoms caused by allergies, including:

  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis): This includes symptoms like sneezing, itchy or runny nose, nasal congestion, and watery eyes due to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander.
  • Hives (urticaria): Itchy, raised welts on the skin that often appear suddenly, usually triggered by allergens like certain foods, medications, or environmental factors.

Fexofenadine works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body responsible for allergic reactions. By reducing histamine activity, it helps alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, itching, a runny nose, and watery eyes.

How does Fexofenadine work?

Fexofenadine works by blocking histamine, a chemical released during an allergic reaction. Histamine typically binds to receptors in different tissues, causing symptoms like itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. By preventing histamine from binding to these receptors, Fexofenadine helps reduce these symptoms, offering relief without causing drowsiness, unlike some older antihistamines.

How to take Fexofenadine

Always follow your doctor’s instructions when taking Fexofenadine. If you're unsure about anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

For adults and children aged 12 years and older:

  • The usual dose is one 120mg tablet per day.
  • Take the tablet with water before a meal.
  • Fexofenadine starts working within 1 hour and lasts for 24 hours.

If you take more Fexofenadine than recommended:

  • If you accidentally take too many tablets, contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital immediately.
  • Overdose symptoms may include dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, and dry mouth.

If you forget to take a dose:

  • Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed tablet.
  • Simply take your next dose at the usual time.

If you stop taking Fexofenadine:

  • Let your doctor know if you wish to stop taking Fexofenadine before finishing your prescribed course. Stopping early may cause your symptoms to come back.

For any additional questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Who should not take Fexofenadine?

Do not take Fexofenadine Tablets if:

  • You are allergic to fexofenadine or any of the ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
