Description

Product description bimatoprost generic Lumigan 0.03% eyelash serum

What’s in the bottle

Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml is a UK Prescription Only Medicine. It contains bimatoprost 0.3 mg/ml, the same active ingredient used in branded ophthalmic products like Lumigan and Latisse. Each 3ml bottle is a one-month supply when used at the standard once-nightly off-label dose for eyelash growth, and is supplied with a sterile dropper bottle for accurate, hygienic application.

From glaucoma drop to eyelash serum

Bimatoprost was originally developed for glaucoma and ocular hypertension, where lash lengthening was first noticed as a side effect. That side effect turned out to be remarkably consistent. Over time, prescribers in the UK and around the world began using bimatoprost off-label as an eyelash growth treatment for adults with hypotrichosis, using a structured protocol that limits exposure to the eyelid margin rather than the eye surface.

Latisse, the US-branded version, is licensed specifically for eyelash growth in some countries, but in the UK, only the glaucoma indication is licensed. Off-label use for lashes is well established in clinical practice and, when prescribed responsibly, is well tolerated.

Why a real medicine, rather than a cosmetic serum

Where this product really earns its place is in adults whose lashes have thinned due to age, repeated lash extension use, alopecia areata, chemotherapy, thyroid disease, or simply genetics. Cosmetic eyelash serums in the GSL aisle work mostly through hydration and conditioning.

Bimatoprost works on the lash hair cycle itself. That’s a fundamentally different mechanism, and the visible results over 16 weeks are usually noticeably greater than anything you’ll find on a supermarket shelf.

Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan/Latisse 0.03% Eyelash Serum

A grown-up, evidence-led guide to using bimatoprost 0.03% off-label for eyelash growth, written for adults who want longer, fuller lashes without falling for clickbait, gimmicks, or unregulated knock-offs.

Courierpharmacy.co.uk divider

If you’ve spent half a year layering serums, mascaras, and false lashes, wondering whether your eyelashes are ever coming back, you’re not alone. Hypotrichosis of the eyelashes (the medical name for sparse or thinning lashes) is more common than most people realise, and the cosmetic eyelash serum aisle is a graveyard of vague claims and disappointed customers. Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml is something different. It’s a genuine prescription medicine, the same active ingredient used in glaucoma eye drops, repurposed (off-label in the UK) at the eyelash margin to lengthen, thicken, and darken lashes over 16 weeks. At Courier Pharmacy, we treat lashes the way we treat hair loss, MCAS, or any other long-term concern. Real assessment, real prescribing, real follow-up. Healthcare that fits you, not the other way round.

Treatment dosage Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

The standard off-label dosing protocol used by UK prescribers for eyelash growth is one drop of bimatoprost 0.03% applied to the upper eyelid margin once nightly, using a fresh sterile applicator per eye. This differs from the licensed glaucoma dose, in which the drop is instilled directly onto the eye surface.

The induction phase lasts 16 weeks. Most patients begin to notice changes in lash length and density between weeks 8 and 12, with peak results visible at week 16. The product should not be applied to the lower eyelid margin, since this can cause unwanted hair growth on the cheek and skin staining.

After the 16-week induction, many patients move to a maintenance phase to preserve their results. Maintenance dosing is typically every other night or two to three nights per week, adjusted based on response. Stopping treatment entirely usually leads to a gradual return to baseline lash density over several weeks to months as the lash hair cycle resets.

Important practical points. The bottle should not be used in both eyes with the same dropper. A fresh, sterile, single-use applicator is recommended per eye to avoid contamination. The cap should be replaced immediately after use, and contact lenses should be removed before application and reinserted at least 15 minutes afterwards.

For glaucoma use, the licensed dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. This deep dive focuses on the off-label eyelash use, which Courier Pharmacy supplies after a clinical consultation rather than as a routine cosmetic.

Overview of Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

Five things worth knowing before you start:

  • This is a Prescription Only Medicine, not a cosmetic serum, prescribed off-label in the UK for eyelash growth
  • The induction phase is 16 weeks; full results are not visible before week 12 to 16
  • Application is to the upper eyelid margin only, with a fresh sterile applicator per eye
  • The most distinctive risks are eyelid skin darkening and increased iris pigmentation, which can be permanent
  • Maintenance dosing is needed once results are achieved; stopping treatment causes lashes to return to baseline

Most patients start to notice subtle changes in lash thickness and density between week 8 and week 12, with the more dramatic transformation in length, fullness, and pigmentation happening between week 12 and week 16. That timeline is one of the most useful, realistic checkpoints to set at the start. If nothing has changed at week 8, that’s normal. If nothing has changed at week 16, the medicine is unlikely to suit you.

The product addresses lash growth at the biological level, not the cosmetic one. Cosmetic serums hydrate and condition the lash surface, which can produce a modest improvement in shine and a small reduction in breakage. Bimatoprost extends the anagen (growth) phase of the lash hair cycle and increases the proportion of lashes that are growing at any one time, which produces a measurable difference in length and thickness rather than just appearance.

The risks worth knowing about are mostly cosmetic but can be lasting. Eyelid skin darkening, increased iris pigmentation (which can be permanent and may produce subtle differences in eye colour, particularly noticeable in lighter eyes), and conjunctival redness are the three to flag. None are dangerous, but all should be discussed before treatment starts.

Maintenance is a permanent part of the picture. Once you’ve reached your 16-week peak, lashes will gradually return to their baseline length and density if treatment stops. This isn’t a one-and-done treatment. It’s a long-term partnership with the medicine, similar in principle to how minoxidil works for scalp hair loss.

The protocol exists for a reason. Bimatoprost is licensed for glaucoma at a slightly different application route, and applying the product carelessly (e.g., directly into the eye, onto the lower eyelid, or via a contaminated brush) substantially increases the risk of side effects. The off-label eyelash protocol is designed to put the medicine where it works (the upper lash line) and minimise contact where it doesn’t need to be.

Why choose Courier Pharmacy for Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

Eyelash growth treatment with a real medicine deserves more than an automated checkout. We built our prescribing service around the four things we believe make the difference between a tidy result you keep, and a regretted purchase you abandon at week 6: personalisation, guidance, trust, and community.

Personalisation comes first. Our online consultation looks at your eye history (any history of glaucoma, uveitis, dry eye, herpes keratitis, or recent cataract surgery), your current medicines (including any other ocular treatments), your goals, and your timeline. From there, our prescribers decide whether bimatoprost is the right fit, or whether a different option (a cosmetic peptide serum, lash extensions, or a referral if there’s an underlying medical issue) would suit you better. Hair loss treatment that fits you isn’t just for scalp hair. The same principle applies here.

Guidance follows. We don’t just dispense the bottle. Our pharmacist team can walk you through the application technique, what to expect at week 4, week 8, and week 16, what to flag if anything feels off, and how to think about maintenance once you’ve reached your peak result. Trust is the baseline, not the differentiator. All prescribing is reviewed by UK-qualified prescribers, all medicines are dispensed by a UK-registered pharmacy, and all our content is grounded in published evidence and SmPC guidance.

Community is the bit most pharmacies skip. Our brand ambassador, Dr Ada Jex-Cori, exists to remind us that healthcare should listen, adapt, and show up for people, even when they’re not buying anything. That’s why our free fortnightly community talks at Insomnia in Derby are open to anyone, including people who are still deciding whether bimatoprost, a cosmetic serum, or simply leaving things alone is the right answer for them.

Buy Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml (prescription only) from Courier Pharmacy

Bimatoprost 0.03% eyelash serum is a Prescription Only Medicine in the UK and can only be supplied after a prescriber has reviewed your suitability. At Courier Pharmacy, the serum is available after a quick online consultation reviewed by a UK-qualified prescriber, with optional free pharmacist support before or after you order.

How it works:

  1. Complete a quick online consultation
  2. A UK prescriber reviews your answers
  3. If approved, a prescription is issued
  4. We dispense and deliver discreetly to your door

If bimatoprost isn’t suitable for you, we’ll explain why and suggest the next best option. That might be a regulated cosmetic eyelash serum if your lash thinning is mild, a referral to your GP or an ophthalmologist if there’s an underlying eye condition that needs assessing first, or a more conservative approach (giving extensions a break, addressing thyroid or iron status, or treating an underlying alopecia) if that’s what your situation calls for.

Active ingredient in Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

The active ingredient is bimatoprost 0.3 mg/ml (0.03%). Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide, structurally related to prostaglandin F2 alpha, that acts on prostamide receptors in the eye and skin. It was first developed and licensed for glaucoma and ocular hypertension, where its primary action is to lower intraocular pressure by improving aqueous humour outflow.

Each ml of solution also contains 0.05 mg of benzalkonium chloride as a preservative, plus citric acid monohydrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate heptahydrate, sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, and water for injections. The benzalkonium chloride content matters clinically: it can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and can occasionally cause surface eye irritation, particularly in patients with dry eyes or compromised corneas. Patients with a known history of benzalkonium chloride hypersensitivity should not use this product.

Courierpharmacy.co.uk divider

What is Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml used for?

Bimatoprost 0.3 mg/ml is licensed in the UK for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in adults with chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, used either as monotherapy or alongside topical beta-blockers. That is the only licensed indication.

Off-label, it is widely used by UK prescribers for the treatment of eyelash hypotrichosis, applied to the upper eyelid margin rather than instilled into the eye. This off-label use is supported by strong clinical evidence and decades of post-marketing experience, with predictable benefits in lash length, thickness, and darkness, and a well-characterised side-effect profile.

The product can suit adults whose lashes have thinned through ageing, repeated lash extension use, alopecia areata, post-chemotherapy regrowth, thyroid disease, or simply genetics. It isn't suitable for under-18s, isn't recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and isn't a first-line option in patients with a history of uveitis, herpes simplex eye infection, complicated cataract surgery, active eye inflammation, or known benzalkonium chloride hypersensitivity.

How does Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml work?

To understand how bimatoprost grows lashes, it helps to think about the lash hair cycle first. Each eyelash goes through a growing phase (anagen), a transition phase (catagen), and a resting phase (telogen) before being shed and replaced. The proportion of lashes in anagen at any one time, and the length of that growth phase, determines how long and full the overall lash line looks.

Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide that prolongs the anagen phase, which has two effects. First, lashes stay in the active growth phase for longer, so each individual lash grows longer before being shed. Second, the proportion of lashes in active growth at any one time increases, which makes the overall lash line look thicker. There is also evidence that bimatoprost increases the size and pigment content of the lash hair follicle, producing thicker, darker lashes over time.

The same prostamide mechanism is responsible for two of the most distinctive side effects. Bimatoprost can stimulate hair growth wherever it comes into repeated contact with the skin, which is why careful application is important. It can also stimulate melanocytes in the iris and the eyelid skin, leading to gradual darkening of both. The iris pigment changes are typically most noticeable in mixed-coloured (e.g. green-brown or hazel) eyes, where small increases in melanin production can subtly shift the overall colour of the iris over months to years.

Importantly, this mechanism is fundamentally different from that of cosmetic eyelash serums. Cosmetic products work mostly at the lash surface (hydration, conditioning, peptide signalling). Bimatoprost works at the follicle, on the hair cycle itself. That's why the results are biological rather than cosmetic, and why they fade if treatment stops.

After ocular dosing, systemic exposure to bimatoprost is very low (less than 0.2 ng/ml), with no accumulation over time. At the much smaller volumes used for eyelash growth (a single drop on the upper lid margin rather than directly into the eye), systemic exposure is even lower, which is why the cardiovascular and respiratory cautions associated with glaucoma use are uncommonly relevant in this context.

Courierpharmacy.co.uk divider

How to use Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

Use the product exactly as your prescriber and our pharmacist team explain. The standard off-label eyelash protocol is to apply 1 drop to the upper eyelid margin once nightly, using a fresh, sterile applicator per eye.

Practical step-by-step:

  1. Wash your hands and remove all eye makeup, contact lenses, and lash extensions before application.
  2. Gently dispense one drop of solution onto a fresh, sterile single-use applicator brush (one applicator per eye, never shared between eyes).
  3. Apply the brush along the skin of the upper eyelid margin, where the lash line meets the lid, drawing it gently from the inner to the outer corner.
  4. Blot any excess solution with a clean tissue immediately. Do not apply to the lower eyelid margin.
  5. Replace the bottle cap, dispose of the used applicator, and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting contact lenses.

Apply once daily, in the evening, ideally as the last step of your bedtime routine. The 3ml bottle is a one-month supply at the standard once-nightly off-label dose. Once opened, the bottle should be discarded after 4 weeks, even if some solution remains, to reduce the risk of contamination.

Common application mistakes to avoid. Applying the drop directly to the eye rather than the lash margin, sharing applicators between eyes, applying to the lower eyelid (which leads to unwanted cheek hair and skin darkening), letting the dropper tip touch the eye, eyelid, fingertips, or any other surface, and continuing to use a bottle past its 4-week open shelf-life. Each of these increases the risk of side effects without improving results.

If you miss a dose, simply apply the next dose at your usual time. Don't double up. Consistency over 16 weeks matters far more than catching up on a single missed night.

Warnings and precautions for Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

Bimatoprost is a real medicine, not a cosmetic, and several precautions are worth understanding before starting. Prostaglandin analogue periorbitopathy (PAP) is the most distinctive set of effects to be aware of. Bimatoprost can cause deepening of the eyelid sulcus, ptosis, eyelid retraction, and changes to the periorbital fat. Most of these changes are mild, can occur within the first month of treatment, and are at least partially reversible if treatment is stopped. They are the same mechanism that produces the desired lash growth, so a degree of overlap is expected, but more pronounced changes should be flagged. Iris pigmentation changes can be permanent. Bimatoprost increases melanin content in iris melanocytes, which can produce a gradual darkening of the iris (typically starting around the pupil and spreading outward). Patients with light blue or green eyes are usually less affected; mixed-colour irises are more likely to show visible change over months to years. This effect is more associated with on-eye glaucoma dosing than with eyelid-margin application, but it should still be discussed openly during consultation. Eyelid skin darkening (periocular hyperpigmentation) is common and usually fades over months after treatment stops. Hair growth on the cheek can occur if the product migrates onto the skin below the lash line. Both are reasons to keep the application strictly to the upper lid margin and to blot any excess solution promptly. Caution is needed in patients with active eye inflammation (uveitis, iritis), a history of herpes simplex keratitis, complicated or recent cataract surgery, dry eye disease, or any condition that compromises the corneal surface. Cystoid macular oedema has been uncommonly reported in glaucoma patients, particularly those with risk factors such as aphakia or a torn posterior lens capsule. The risk is much lower with eyelid-margin application than with on-eye dosing, but it is still worth flagging. Bimatoprost is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. The medicine is not recommended in patients with severe respiratory disease or significant cardiovascular conditions, although systemic exposure from eyelid-margin application is very low. Soft contact lens wearers should remove lenses before application and reinsert at least 15 minutes afterwards, due to the benzalkonium chloride content. Patients with a known hypersensitivity to bimatoprost or to benzalkonium chloride should not use this product. If any skin redness, severe itching, persistent stinging, or vision changes develop, treatment should be paused and a prescriber contacted. Courierpharmacy.co.uk divider

Side effects of Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

Most side effects of bimatoprost when used for eyelash growth are mild, ocular, and limited to the early weeks of treatment. The list below is drawn from the SmPC, where ocular dosing is the licensed use; eyelid-margin dosing is associated with a lower frequency of most ocular effects, but the same principles apply.

Very common (more than 1 in 10 people):

  • Conjunctival hyperaemia (redness of the white of the eye)
  • Ocular pruritus (itching)
  • Growth of eyelashes (the desired effect)
  • Prostaglandin analogue periorbitopathy

Common (between 1 in 100 and 1 in 10):

  • Headache
  • Superficial punctate keratitis, corneal erosion, ocular burning, irritation
  • Allergic conjunctivitis, blepharitis, foreign body sensation
  • Dry eye, eye pain, photophobia, tearing, eye discharge
  • Worsening of visual acuity, asthenopia, conjunctival oedema, blurred vision
  • Increased iris pigmentation, eyelash darkening, eyelid erythema, eyelid pruritus
  • Pigmentation of periocular skin
  • Hypertension
  • Liver function test abnormalities

Uncommon (between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 100):

  • Dizziness
  • Retinal haemorrhage, uveitis, cystoid macular oedema, iritis
  • Eyelid retraction, periorbital erythema, eyelid oedema
  • Nausea
  • Hirsutism (unwanted hair growth in surrounding skin)
  • Asthenia (general weakness)

Not known frequency:

  • Asthma, asthma exacerbation, COPD exacerbation, dyspnoea
  • Periocular skin discoloration
  • Hypersensitivity reactions including signs of eye allergy and allergic dermatitis

If you suspect you've experienced a side effect, you can report it to the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme at https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk. Reporting helps regulators continue to monitor the safety of bimatoprost in real-world UK use, including its off-label cosmetic use.

Drug interactions with Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

Drug interactions with bimatoprost when used for eyelash growth are uncommon, because systemic absorption from eyelid-margin application is very low (less than 0.2 ng/ml even at full glaucoma dosing) and bimatoprost is metabolised by multiple enzyme pathways.

The most relevant interactions to flag during consultation are with other ocular medicines. Patients using prostaglandin analogues for glaucoma (e.g. latanoprost, travoprost, tafluprost) should not use bimatoprost as an eyelash serum at the same time, since combining prostaglandin analogues can reduce their intraocular pressure-lowering effect. If you use a topical beta-blocker for glaucoma alongside bimatoprost, the two should be applied at least 5 minutes apart.

Soft contact lens wearers should remove lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, because benzalkonium chloride can be absorbed by soft lenses and may cause irritation or discolouration.

Other systemic medicines (oral, topical, or inhaled) are very unlikely to interact meaningfully with eyelid-margin bimatoprost. As always, the safest approach is to disclose every prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medicine you're taking during the online consultation.

Frequently asked questions about Bimatoprost Generic Lumigan 0.03% Eyelash Serum 3ml

What is bimatoprost 0.03% eyelash serum used for?

Bimatoprost 0.03% is licensed in the UK for glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Off-label, prescribers use it as an eyelash serum for adults with hypotrichosis (sparse or thinning lashes), applied to the upper eyelid margin once nightly to lengthen, thicken, and darken lashes over a 16-week induction phase.

How long does it take to see results?

Most patients begin to notice subtle changes between week 8 and week 12, with peak results visible at week 16. If nothing has changed at week 16, the medicine is unlikely to suit you, and your prescriber will discuss alternatives.

How long does a 3ml bottle last?

A 3ml bottle is a one-month supply at the standard once-nightly off-label dose. Once opened, the bottle should be discarded after 4 weeks, even if some solution remains, to reduce contamination risk.

Do I need maintenance treatment after the first 16 weeks?

Yes. Once you've reached your peak lash density at 16 weeks, lashes will gradually return to baseline if treatment stops. Maintenance is typically every other night or two to three times a week, adjusted based on how your lashes respond.

Can I apply bimatoprost to both upper and lower lash lines?

No. Bimatoprost should only be applied to the upper eyelid margin. Applying to the lower lid significantly increases the risk of unwanted cheek hair and skin darkening, without adding meaningful benefit to lash growth.

Will my eye colour change?

Possibly. Bimatoprost can increase iris pigmentation, particularly in mixed-colour eyes (hazel, green-brown), and these changes can be permanent. The risk is much lower with eyelid-margin application than with on-eye dosing, but it should be discussed openly during consultation.

Can I use bimatoprost if I wear contact lenses?

Yes, but you should remove lenses before each application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. The benzalkonium chloride preservative can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause irritation or discolouration.

Can I use bimatoprost during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No. Bimatoprost is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Eyelash growth treatment should be paused if you become pregnant during a course.

Can I use bimatoprost if I have glaucoma?

If you already use a prostaglandin analogue eye drop (e.g. latanoprost) for glaucoma, you should not also use bimatoprost as an eyelash serum, as this can reduce the effectiveness of your glaucoma treatment. Discuss this with your ophthalmologist and our prescriber before starting.

What should I do if I get redness or irritation?

Mild conjunctival redness and itching are common in the first few weeks and usually settle. If irritation is severe, persistent, or accompanied by visual changes or eye pain, stop the medicine and contact your prescriber. Switching to a less frequent dosing schedule may help.

Can I wear mascara or false lashes alongside bimatoprost?

Yes, but apply mascara only after the bimatoprost has fully dried. Lash extensions are not recommended during the induction phase, both because adhesives can interfere with the medicine and because the lash bed is more sensitive during active growth.

Is bimatoprost the same as Lumigan or Latisse?

The active ingredient is identical: bimatoprost 0.3 mg/ml. Lumigan is the UK brand name licensed for glaucoma. Latisse is the US brand name licensed specifically for eyelash growth in some countries. In the UK, only the glaucoma indication is licensed, so eyelash use is off-label regardless of the brand or generic supplied.

Why is a fresh applicator needed for each eye?

To prevent contamination and reduce the small but real risk of bacterial keratitis or cross-contamination between eyes. Single-use sterile applicators keep each eye's microbial environment separate and protect the integrity of the bottle's solution.

How is bimatoprost different from cosmetic eyelash serums?

Cosmetic serums work mostly at the lash surface through hydration, conditioning, and peptide signalling. Bimatoprost works on the lash hair cycle itself, prolonging the growth phase and increasing follicle activity. The results are biological rather than cosmetic, and significantly more pronounced over 16 weeks.

What if my lashes thin again after stopping?

That's expected. Lashes will gradually return to baseline length and density over several weeks to months once treatment stops, because the lash hair cycle resets. Maintenance dosing keeps the result; stopping completely undoes it.

Can I use bimatoprost on my eyebrows?

Bimatoprost is sometimes used off-label for eyebrow growth, but the protocol, evidence base, and safety profile are different from those for eyelashes. Discuss this separately during consultation if it's something you're considering. The 3ml eyelash supply is not designed to cover both areas.

What if I have dry eyes?

Bimatoprost should be used with caution in patients with dry eye disease, because the benzalkonium chloride preservative can worsen surface symptoms. A preservative-free formulation is sometimes available (single-dose units) and may be more suitable. Discuss this with our prescriber.

Can I drive after applying bimatoprost?

You apply the product at night, so this isn't usually relevant. If you experience transient blurred vision after application, wait until your vision clears before driving.

What if I have a history of uveitis or iritis?

Bimatoprost is used with caution in patients with a history of uveitis or iritis, due to a small but real risk of triggering recurrence. Discuss this carefully during consultation; an alternative may be more appropriate.
