Pregnacare Plus tablets

Description

Product description Pregnacare Plus Omega-3 Tablets & Capsules 56 Pack

What Pregnacare Plus is

Pregnacare Plus is a daily two-part pregnancy food supplement. The pack holds two blister strips: one with 28 Pregnacare multi-nutrient tablets, one with 28 Omega-3 Marine Oil capsules. You take one of each every day.

Vitabiotics makes the product. They are the UK’s leading pregnancy supplement maker. Pregnacare is the UK’s No.1 pregnancy supplement brand.

The 56-pack (28 tablets + 28 capsules) gives you 4 weeks’ supply. The blister packs are marked with the days of the week to help you keep track.

Why the two-part format matters

The multivitamin tablet holds 19 vitamins and minerals for pregnancy. Adding Omega-3 to that same tablet would either make it too big to swallow or would need cutting some nutrients to make room.

Separating the Omega-3 into its own capsule solves both problems. You get the full multivitamin range plus a good dose of Omega-3, without a giant tablet.

The two-part format also lets you skip the Omega-3 capsule if you eat plenty of oily fish, or double up on Omega-3 if you don’t eat any. However, always follow the pack directions unless your GP or midwife advises otherwise.

The DHA story

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. It’s the main structural fat in brain cells and the retina of the eye. The developing baby needs plenty of DHA in the third trimester, when the brain grows fastest.

The body can make small amounts of DHA from other omega-3 fatty acids (like ALA from flaxseed), but the conversion is limited. Direct DHA from oily fish or fish oil supplements is much more efficient.

The 300mg DHA per capsule in Pregnacare Plus covers the extra 200mg pregnancy need with a small margin. This matches international expert guidance for pregnant women.

The 60mg EPA

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is another omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil. It supports normal heart function and has anti-inflammatory effects. The 60mg dose in Pregnacare Plus adds to the overall omega-3 support.

Same tablet as Pregnacare Original

The multivitamin tablet in Pregnacare Plus is the same 19-nutrient formula as Pregnacare Original. So you get all the same benefits: 400 micrograms folic acid (matching UK DoH guidance), 10 micrograms vitamin D, iron, iodine, zinc, and the full B-complex.

The vitamin A comes from beta-carotene, which is the safe pregnancy form. High-dose retinol (in cod liver oil and some general multivitamins) can harm the developing baby, so pregnancy supplements should always use beta-carotene.

Food supplement status

Pregnacare Plus sits in the food supplement category, not the licensed medicine one. This means it doesn’t carry MHRA approval and can’t make medical claims.

We can only use the approved EU/UK health claims for its nutrients. So we can’t say the product ‘guarantees’ anything or ‘prevents’ complications. We can say the nutrients support normal body functions during pregnancy.

Pregnacare Plus Omega-3 Tablets & Capsules 56 Pack

Pregnacare Original’s 19-nutrient tablet plus a separate Omega-3 capsule with 300mg DHA for baby’s brain and eye development

Pregnacare Plus Omega-3 is a daily two-in-one food supplement from Vitabiotics. Each daily serving gives you two things: the Pregnacare Original multivitamin tablet (with 19 vitamins and minerals for pregnancy) plus a separate Omega-3 Marine Oil capsule (with 300mg DHA and 60mg EPA).

The two-part format is what sets Pregnacare Plus apart from Pregnacare Original. The multivitamin tablet covers the same 19 vitamins and minerals as Original. The added Omega-3 capsule delivers DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), a long-chain fatty acid that plays a key role in baby’s brain and eye development.

DHA is one of the most important nutrients for the developing baby’s brain and eyes. The brain grows fastest in the third trimester of pregnancy and the first two years of life. During this time, DHA builds the fatty tissue in brain cells and the retina.

The main dietary sources of DHA are oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, trout). However, many women in the UK don’t eat oily fish regularly. Others avoid it during pregnancy due to worries about mercury or other contaminants.

Pregnacare Plus solves this problem by providing purified fish oil in capsule form. The oil is filtered to remove contaminants, so you get the DHA without the mercury or other worries.

The approved health claim is: maternal intake of DHA contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the foetus. A daily intake of 200mg DHA is required in addition to the recommended daily intake for adults. Pregnacare Plus provides 300mg DHA per capsule, which covers this extra pregnancy need with some margin.

The tablet component is identical to Pregnacare Original. It gives 400 micrograms folic acid and 10 micrograms vitamin D, matching the exact UK Department of Health recommendations. It also uses beta-carotene as the vitamin A source, which is safe in pregnancy (unlike retinol).

Take one Pregnacare tablet and one Omega-3 capsule daily with your main meal. Any main meal of the day works. The 56-pack (28 tablets + 28 capsules) lasts 4 weeks.

An important note: Pregnacare Plus contains fish (in the Omega-3 capsule). It’s not suitable if you have a fish allergy. It’s also not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. Pregnacare Original (without Omega-3) is a vegetarian option.

Some women need a higher dose of folic acid (5mg instead of 400 micrograms). This applies if you have a personal or family history of neural tube defects, diabetes, a BMI of 30 or above, coeliac disease, sickle cell disease, or you take anti-epileptic medicines. The higher dose needs a prescription from your GP.

Pregnacare Plus is a food supplement, not a licensed medicine. Don’t use it in place of a varied diet and healthy lifestyle. It works alongside a healthy pregnancy diet and antenatal care.

At Courier Pharmacy, we stock Pregnacare Plus as part of our women’s health range. Our pharmacy team can help you decide if it suits your needs, or whether Pregnacare Original, Pregnacare Max, or a different approach would fit better.

When to see a doctor about pregnancy nutrition or supplements

Pregnacare Plus is a food supplement for daily pregnancy support. However, some situations need medical review before or during use.

  • Fish allergy: don’t use Pregnacare Plus. Use Pregnacare Original (which doesn’t contain fish oil) or another fish-free pregnancy multivitamin
  • You have a personal or family history of neural tube defects (spina bifida): you need 5mg folic acid daily, not the 400 micrograms in Pregnacare
  • You have diabetes (type 1 or type 2): you need 5mg folic acid daily
  • You have sickle cell disease, or thalassaemia: you need 5mg folic acid daily
  • You take anti-epileptic medicines: you need 5mg folic acid daily, and your medicines may need review during pregnancy
  • You take warfarin: both the vitamin K in the tablet AND the fish oil in the capsule can affect warfarin. Discuss with your GP or anticoagulation clinic before using
  • You take other blood-thinning medicines (clopidogrel, apixaban, rivaroxaban, aspirin): fish oil may add to bleeding risk
  • You have a scheduled surgery: fish oil may need stopping a week or two before
  • You have haemochromatosis or another iron-loading condition: the iron content may not be suitable
  • You have thyroid disease: the iodine content may affect thyroid function
  • You have severe morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum) with dehydration or weight loss: needs urgent medical treatment
  • You take other multivitamins, cod liver oil, or single-nutrient supplements: combining products can push some nutrients above safe levels
  • Soya allergy: the tablet contains soya (vitamin E source)
  • You experience unusual bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movements during pregnancy: contact your midwife or maternity unit urgently
  • Signs of allergic reaction: rash, facial swelling, breathing difficulty. Call 999

Five key takeaways

  • Pregnacare Plus is a daily two-in-one pregnancy supplement: a Pregnacare multivitamin tablet (19 nutrients) plus a separate Omega-3 capsule (300mg DHA + 60mg EPA).
  • The added Omega-3 supports normal brain and eye development in the baby. Choose Plus over Original if you don’t eat oily fish twice a week.
  • The tablet matches UK Department of Health guidance: 400 micrograms folic acid, 10 micrograms vitamin D. Safe beta-carotene form of vitamin A (never retinol).
  • Contains fish (allergen). NOT suitable for vegetarians or vegans. Extra care needed if on warfarin or other blood thinners (both vitamin K and fish oil affect bleeding).
  • For adults trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy. One tablet + one capsule daily with main meal. 56-pack lasts 4 weeks. Food supplement, not a licensed medicine.

What is Pregnacare Plus: overview

Where Pregnacare Plus fits in pregnancy nutrition

Good pregnancy nutrition covers three main areas: a varied diet, folic acid, and vitamin D. Pregnacare Original covers the folic acid and vitamin D bases. Pregnacare Plus adds a fourth area: Omega-3 DHA for baby’s brain and eye development.

If your diet includes oily fish twice a week (as UK guidance recommends), you’re getting plenty of DHA already. Pregnacare Original may be enough for you. However, many women don’t eat oily fish that often, particularly during pregnancy when some worry about mercury or contaminants.

Pregnacare Plus fills that gap with purified fish oil. It gives you the DHA without the concerns about mercury or other fish contaminants.

Pregnacare Plus vs Pregnacare Original

Both contain the same 19-nutrient multivitamin tablet. The difference is the added Omega-3 capsule in Plus.

Choose Plus if you don’t eat oily fish twice a week, or if you want extra insurance on DHA for baby’s brain and eye development. Choose Original if you eat oily fish regularly and don’t need the added Omega-3, or if you can’t take fish oil (vegetarian, vegan, fish allergy).

Pregnacare Plus vs Pregnacare Max

Pregnacare Max is the top-tier product in the range. It contains higher nutrient levels than Original or Plus, plus additional nutrients like calcium, choline, and more Omega-3 (with EPA and DHA).

Max is worth considering if you want the most comprehensive formula. However, most women don’t need Max levels. Plus provides all the essentials plus DHA at good levels.

Pregnacare Plus vs Pregnacare Conception

Pregnacare Conception is designed for the trying-to-conceive stage. It contains additional nutrients thought to support conception (inositol, L-arginine, higher folic acid).

Some women use Pregnacare Conception when trying to conceive, then switch to Pregnacare Plus once pregnant. Others use Pregnacare Plus throughout preconception and pregnancy. Both approaches work.

Pregnacare Plus vs eating oily fish

The UK NHS recommends eating oily fish twice a week (salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, trout). This provides DHA and EPA plus other nutrients like vitamin D.

Pregnancy guidance recommends limiting oily fish to no more than two portions a week due to mercury and pollutant concerns. So even for women who love oily fish, there’s a cap on intake.

Pregnacare Plus offers a controlled, purified source of DHA and EPA that sidesteps mercury and pollutant worries. It works alongside dietary fish (up to the two-portion weekly limit), not just as a replacement.

Pregnacare Plus vs standalone pregnancy fish oil

You can buy standalone pregnancy fish oil supplements (like Peggy or generic pregnancy DHA products). These give DHA without the multivitamin.

Choose Pregnacare Plus for a combined multivitamin plus DHA in one convenient pack. Choose standalone fish oil if you’re already taking a separate multivitamin you’re happy with.

Pregnacare Plus vs cod liver oil (DO NOT USE)

Do NOT use cod liver oil during pregnancy. Cod liver oil contains retinol (the form of vitamin A that can harm the baby’s development at high doses). Pregnancy guidance advises avoiding cod liver oil throughout pregnancy.

Pregnacare Plus is safe because the fish oil is purified specifically to remove retinol and other unwanted compounds. It gives you the DHA and EPA benefits without the retinol risk.

Pregnacare Plus vs Boots or supermarket pregnancy multivitamins

Own-brand pregnancy multivitamins from Boots or supermarkets often provide similar tablet coverage at lower prices. Fewer offer a separate Omega-3 capsule, so Pregnacare Plus stands out for its dual-pack format.

Check own-brand labels for 400 micrograms folic acid, 10 micrograms vitamin D, beta-carotene (not retinol), and DHA content if that matters to you. Vitabiotics brand advantage is the extensive research background and consistent quality.

Main nutrients in Pregnacare Plus

Omega-3 DHA 300mg (in the capsule)

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. It's the main structural fat in brain cells and the retina of the eye. During pregnancy, the developing baby needs a steady supply of DHA, particularly in the third trimester when brain growth accelerates.

Approved health claim: maternal intake of DHA contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the foetus. This claim requires a daily intake of at least 200mg DHA in addition to the adult recommended daily intake. Pregnacare Plus provides 300mg DHA per capsule.

Omega-3 EPA 60mg (in the capsule)

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is another omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil. It supports normal heart function and has anti-inflammatory effects. The 60mg dose adds to the overall omega-3 support for both mother and baby.

Folic acid 400 micrograms (in the tablet)

Folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida in the developing baby. The 400 microgram dose matches UK Department of Health guidance for most women.

Some women need a higher 5mg dose via prescription (see the treatment dosage section above).

Vitamin D 10 micrograms (in the tablet)

Vitamin D helps the baby's bone development and supports normal immune function for both mother and baby. The 10 microgram dose matches UK Department of Health guidance for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Iron 17mg (in the tablet)

Iron needs go up during pregnancy to support the increased blood volume and the baby's development. The 17mg dose provides pregnancy-appropriate levels for prevention. If you develop iron deficiency during pregnancy, higher doses from your GP are needed.

Iodine 140 micrograms (in the tablet)

Iodine is essential for the baby's thyroid and brain development. Iodine deficiency in pregnancy can affect the baby's neurological development.

Beta-carotene (safe vitamin A source, in the tablet)

Beta-carotene is the safe form of vitamin A for pregnancy. The body converts only what it needs into active vitamin A, so there's no toxicity risk. Never use products containing retinol (like cod liver oil) during pregnancy.

Other nutrients (in the tablet)

Vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, the full B-complex (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, biotin, pantothenic acid), magnesium, zinc, copper, and selenium round out the 19-nutrient tablet formula.

Other ingredients in Pregnacare Plus

Contains fish (Omega-3 capsule)

The Omega-3 capsule contains purified fish oil. Don't use Pregnacare Plus if you have a fish allergy. Choose Pregnacare Original or another fish-free pregnancy multivitamin instead.

Contains soya (tablet)

The vitamin E in the tablet comes from soya. If you have a soya allergy, don't use Pregnacare Plus. Discuss soya-free pregnancy vitamin options with your midwife or GP.

Halal-certified

The gelatin used in the Omega-3 capsule shell is from bovine (beef) source and is Halal-certified. All Pregnacare products are suitable for a Halal diet.

NOT suitable for vegetarians or vegans

The fish oil in the Omega-3 capsule makes Pregnacare Plus unsuitable for vegetarians and vegans. Vegetarians can use Pregnacare Original (which doesn't contain fish oil). Vegans should use Pregnacare Vegan or another vegan-certified pregnancy multivitamin.

What Pregnacare Plus doesn't contain

Gluten-free (safe for coeliac disease, though coeliac women need 5mg folic acid). Lactose-free. Yeast-free. No preservatives. No artificial colours. Not tested on animals.

Tablet excipients

The tablet includes standard multivitamin excipients including maltodextrin, magnesium oxide, microcrystalline cellulose, and film coating materials. Check the current pack label for the full ingredient list.

Capsule shell

The capsule shell contains pharmaceutical-grade gelatin (Halal bovine source), glycerin, and natural lemon oil flavour (to help reduce fish taste).

What is Pregnacare Plus for?

Supporting baby's brain and eye development

The Omega-3 DHA is the main added benefit over Pregnacare Original. DHA is essential for baby's brain and eye development, particularly in the third trimester when the brain grows fastest.

Preventing neural tube defects

The 400 micrograms folic acid in the tablet reduces the risk of neural tube defects like spina bifida in the developing baby.

Supporting the baby's overall development

Vitamin D supports the baby's bone development. Iodine supports thyroid and brain development. Iron supports normal blood formation. Zinc supports normal reproduction.

Supporting the mother's health

Pregnancy places extra nutritional demands on the mother. Pregnacare Plus helps prevent nutritional gaps that could affect maternal health, particularly iron for red blood cell formation, calcium and vitamin D for bones, and B vitamins for energy.

Reducing tiredness and fatigue

Iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin C, and other B vitamins all contribute to reducing tiredness and fatigue. Pregnancy fatigue is common, and adequate nutrient intake helps.

Supporting immune function

Vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and selenium all contribute to normal immune function during pregnancy.

Filling common pregnancy nutritional gaps

Even with a healthy diet, many pregnant women fall short on some nutrients, and few eat enough oily fish for adequate DHA intake. Pregnacare Plus fills these gaps as insurance alongside a varied diet.

What Pregnacare Plus isn't for

Not for people with fish allergy. Use Pregnacare Original or a fish-free alternative.

Not for vegetarians or vegans. Use Pregnacare Original (vegetarian) or Pregnacare Vegan.

Not for women needing higher folic acid (5mg). See your GP for prescription folic acid.

Not for treating established deficiencies. Significant deficiencies of B12, vitamin D, iron, or DHA need proper diagnosis and prescription-strength treatment.

Not for breastfeeding. Switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding or similar after delivery.

Not for children or adult men. Pregnancy-specific formulas are for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive.

Not a substitute for antenatal care, a healthy diet, or medical advice.

Not to combine with other multivitamins, cod liver oil, or standalone fish oil supplements.

Dr Ada Jex Cori pregancy courierpharmacy.co.uk

How does Pregnacare Plus work?

Nutrient replacement and gap-filling

Pregnacare Plus works by delivering pregnancy-appropriate levels of essential vitamins, minerals, and Omega-3 fatty acids daily. Each nutrient has its own role, and together they cover the common nutritional bases of pregnancy.

How the Omega-3 works for baby's development

DHA is a structural component of brain cell membranes and the retina. As the baby's brain and eye tissues grow, they incorporate DHA from mother's blood supply. Mother's blood DHA levels depend on dietary intake or supplementation.

Taking Pregnacare Plus daily maintains steady maternal DHA levels, ensuring the baby has a reliable supply during pregnancy. This is particularly important in the third trimester and early breastfeeding.

Why timing matters

Some nutrients (like folic acid) matter most in the earliest weeks of pregnancy. Others (like DHA) matter most in the third trimester. Daily use throughout pregnancy covers both windows.

Steady-state nutrient levels

Daily consistent dosing builds and maintains steady nutrient levels. This is more effective than sporadic higher doses.

Dr Ada Jex Cori reading courierpharmacy.co.uk

Treatment dosage for Pregnacare Plus

At a glance

  • For: women trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy
  • Dose: one Pregnacare tablet + one Omega-3 capsule daily
  • Timing: with your main meal (any time of day)
  • Duration: continuous daily use from preconception through pregnancy
  • For breastfeeding: switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding after delivery
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily dose
  • Do not use as a substitute for a varied diet and healthy lifestyle

Standard adult dose

Take one Pregnacare tablet and one Omega-3 capsule together, once daily, with your main meal. Swallow whole with water or a cold drink. Do not chew either the tablet or the capsule.

Any main meal works (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). Choose a time that fits your routine. Taking with food helps absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and the fish oil, and reduces the chance of stomach upset.

Take both together or split them

You can take the tablet and capsule together at one meal, or split them across two meals. Some women find taking both at breakfast simplest. Others prefer the capsule with dinner to reduce fish burps during the day.

When to start

Start Pregnacare Plus when you begin trying to conceive, not when you find out you're pregnant. The neural tube (which folic acid protects) forms in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before a positive pregnancy test.

If you're already pregnant and haven't been taking folic acid, start today. Any protection is better than none. Continue throughout pregnancy.

How long to take Pregnacare Plus

Take one tablet + one capsule daily from preconception through the end of pregnancy. After delivery, switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding if you're breastfeeding, or another postnatal multivitamin if not.

Women needing higher folic acid (5mg)

Some women need 5mg folic acid daily instead of the 400 micrograms in Pregnacare. This applies if you have:

  • Personal or family history of neural tube defects (spina bifida)
  • Diabetes (type 1 or type 2)
  • Sickle cell disease or thalassaemia
  • Take anti-epileptic medicines

For any of these, you need a prescription for 5mg folic acid tablets. Take these alongside Pregnacare Plus (which provides the other pregnancy nutrients). Don't just take multiple Pregnacare tablets to get more folic acid, as this would push other nutrients (particularly vitamin A) above safe levels.

Missed doses

If you miss a day, take the tablet and capsule as soon as you remember. If you don't remember until the next day, just carry on with your normal dose. Don't take extras to catch up.

For breastfeeding

After delivery, if you're breastfeeding, switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding (a separate Vitabiotics product with adjusted nutrient levels for breastfeeding and Omega-3 support for baby via breast milk).

How to take Pregnacare Plus

Standard use

Take one Pregnacare tablet and one Omega-3 capsule daily with your main meal. Swallow whole with water or a cold drink.

Swallow whole

Swallow both the tablet and the capsule whole. Don't chew or crush either. The capsule contains fish oil, which will leak if the capsule is broken and can leave an unpleasant fishy taste.

If you have trouble swallowing tablets or capsules, ask us about Pregnacare Liquid or Pregnacare Chewable, which are alternative formats from the same range.

Take with your main meal

Food helps absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and the fish oil (which is entirely fat-soluble). Taking on an empty stomach reduces absorption and may cause stomach upset.

The fish oil in particular needs some dietary fat for good absorption. A meal with any fat content (even a small amount) will do.

Not with tea or coffee

Avoid taking Pregnacare at the same time as tea or coffee. Tannins in tea and compounds in coffee can reduce iron absorption. Leave at least an hour between your dose and these drinks.

Fish burps and how to reduce them

Some people notice a fishy aftertaste or 'fish burps' after taking fish oil capsules. Taking the capsule mid-meal (rather than before or after) usually helps. Taking with a fatty food (like avocado, nuts, or oily foods) also helps.

If fish burps still bother you, try taking the capsule at the largest meal of the day (usually dinner) rather than breakfast.

Consistency matters

Try to take Pregnacare at the same time each day. Setting a phone reminder, keeping the pack somewhere visible, or linking to a daily routine (like brushing teeth after dinner) all help build the habit.

Don't take more than the daily dose

The one-tablet-plus-one-capsule daily dose is designed to give safe pregnancy levels of each nutrient. Taking more can push vitamin A, iron, and Omega-3 above safe levels.

If you feel you need more of a specific nutrient (like higher folic acid for higher-risk pregnancy), see your GP for the right prescription rather than taking extra Pregnacare doses.

Don't combine with other multivitamins or fish oil products

Avoid taking Pregnacare Plus alongside another multivitamin, cod liver oil, standalone fish oil, or standalone vitamin A supplement. Cod liver oil in particular contains retinol (the form of vitamin A that can harm the baby in pregnancy) and adds to the Omega-3 intake.

Storage

Store the pack in a cool dry place, out of direct sunlight. Keep the container sealed. Keep well out of reach of children.

How quickly you'll notice a difference

Most women don't notice a direct 'feeling different' from Pregnacare Plus. The benefits build over weeks and months, supporting both mother and baby's normal development.

The Omega-3 benefits for baby's brain and eye development happen throughout pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester when the brain grows fastest. You won't feel this happening, but the DHA is being used by the baby.

Warnings and precautions for Pregnacare Plus

Fish allergy

Above all, don't use Pregnacare Plus if you have a fish allergy. The Omega-3 capsule contains purified fish oil. Reactions can range from mild rash to severe anaphylaxis.

Use Pregnacare Original or another fish-free pregnancy multivitamin instead.

Warfarin and blood thinners

Both the vitamin K in the tablet AND the Omega-3 in the capsule can affect blood clotting. If you take warfarin, other anticoagulants (apixaban, rivaroxaban, edoxaban, dabigatran), or antiplatelets (clopidogrel, aspirin), discuss with your GP or anticoagulation clinic before starting.

Combining Pregnacare Plus with these medicines may increase bleeding risk. Your prescriber may recommend Pregnacare Original (which has less impact than Plus) or an alternative approach.

Before surgery

Fish oil may need to be stopped 1-2 weeks before scheduled surgery due to mild anticoagulant effects. Tell your surgical team about all supplements you take.

Don't combine with cod liver oil or vitamin A supplements

Don't take Pregnacare Plus alongside cod liver oil, standalone vitamin A supplements, or other multivitamins containing retinol. High-dose vitamin A (as retinol) can harm the developing baby.

Also don't combine with standalone fish oil supplements, as this would push Omega-3 intake above recommended levels.

Higher folic acid dose needed for some women

Pregnacare Plus provides 400 micrograms folic acid. Some women need 5mg via prescription (see the treatment dosage section above for the criteria).

Not for breastfeeding

Switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding after delivery if you're breastfeeding. It has adjusted nutrient levels for the different needs of breastfeeding.

Not for children

Not suitable for children. Keep the pack sealed and well out of reach of children. The iron content in adult pregnancy multivitamins can be harmful to children if taken in accidental large doses.

Iron-loading conditions

The iron content isn't suitable if you have haemochromatosis or other iron-loading conditions. Discuss iron-free pregnancy vitamin options with your GP.

Thyroid conditions

The iodine content can affect thyroid function. If you have thyroid disease, discuss with your GP before starting.

Soya allergy

The tablet contains soya (in the vitamin E). Don't use if you have a soya allergy.

Interactions with certain medicines

Discuss with your GP or midwife before starting if you take:

  • Warfarin (both vitamin K and fish oil affect anticoagulation)
  • Other anticoagulants or antiplatelets (fish oil may add to bleeding risk)
  • Levothyroxine (iron reduces absorption, space by 4 hours)
  • Quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin (iron reduces absorption)
  • Tetracycline antibiotics (iron reduces absorption)
  • Anti-epileptic medicines (folic acid needs review, higher dose usually needed)
  • Any prescribed medicines for long-term conditions

Signs of allergic reaction

Rare allergic reactions to fish oil or other ingredients are possible. Symptoms include rash, itching, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. Call 999 if severe.

Overdose

Don't take more than one tablet plus one capsule daily. Accidental overdose can push vitamin A, iron, and Omega-3 above safe levels. Seek medical advice immediately if a child accidentally takes multiple doses.

Driving and machinery

No expected effects on driving or using machinery.

Alcohol

Alcohol should be avoided completely in pregnancy for other reasons. There's no direct interaction with Pregnacare Plus, but the pregnancy alcohol guidance stands.

Side effects of Pregnacare Plus

Common side effects

Pregnacare Plus is generally well tolerated. Mild stomach upset, nausea, constipation, or fishy aftertaste can happen. Taking with food usually helps.

Fishy aftertaste or fish burps

The Omega-3 capsule can cause a fishy aftertaste or 'fish burps' in some people. Taking the capsule mid-meal (rather than before or after) usually helps. Storing the capsules in the fridge may reduce this too.

Dark stools

The iron content in the tablet can cause dark or black stools. This is normal and doesn't indicate bleeding. However, very dark, sticky, foul-smelling stools may indicate upper gut bleeding, so see your doctor if unsure.

Constipation

Iron can cause constipation. Pregnancy hormones also cause constipation, so this can be worse in pregnancy. Adequate fibre, fluids, and gentle exercise help.

Loose stools

High doses of fish oil can occasionally cause loose stools. The 300mg DHA in Pregnacare Plus is a modest dose unlikely to cause this problem in most people.

Nausea

Early pregnancy nausea is common regardless of supplements. Taking Pregnacare Plus with a full meal reduces the chance of the supplements worsening nausea. If severe, discuss timing options with your midwife.

Allergic reactions (rare)

Rare allergic reactions to fish oil, soya, or other ingredients are possible. Symptoms include rash, itching, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty.

Serious side effects requiring urgent help

Above all, seek urgent medical help for signs of severe allergic reaction (facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread rash). Call 999.

Any pregnancy concerns

For any concerns during pregnancy (bleeding, severe abdominal pain, reduced fetal movements, severe headache, or vision changes), contact your midwife or maternity unit urgently, regardless of whether you think it's related to Pregnacare.

Drug interactions with Pregnacare Plus

Warfarin (particular care needed)

Both the vitamin K in the tablet AND the fish oil in the capsule can affect warfarin. Vitamin K reduces warfarin effect. Fish oil has a mild anticoagulant effect of its own. The combined impact needs review by your GP or anticoagulation clinic.

Other anticoagulants

Apixaban, rivaroxaban, edoxaban, dabigatran, and heparin may have increased bleeding risk when combined with fish oil. Discuss with your GP before starting.

Antiplatelets

Clopidogrel, aspirin, and other antiplatelets may add to fish oil's mild anticoagulant effect. Discuss with your GP.

Levothyroxine

Iron in the tablet reduces levothyroxine absorption. Take levothyroxine first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and Pregnacare Plus at least 4 hours later.

Quinolone antibiotics

Ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and other quinolones bind with iron and calcium, reducing absorption. Leave at least 2 hours between Pregnacare and these antibiotics.

Tetracycline antibiotics

Doxycycline and other tetracyclines also bind with iron. However, tetracyclines are usually avoided in pregnancy anyway.

Anti-epileptic medicines

Phenytoin, carbamazepine, sodium valproate, and others interact with folic acid. Women on these medicines need 5mg folic acid daily (prescription) and specialist input during pregnancy.

Other multivitamins or fish oil products

Don't combine Pregnacare Plus with other multivitamins, cod liver oil, or standalone fish oil supplements. Combined intake can push some nutrients above safe pregnancy levels.

Iron supplements

Don't take extra iron supplements alongside Pregnacare Plus unless prescribed by your GP or midwife for confirmed iron deficiency. Pregnacare Plus contains 17mg iron already.

Alcohol

No direct interaction with Pregnacare Plus, but alcohol should be avoided completely in pregnancy for other reasons.

Frequently asked questions about Pregnacare Plus

What is Pregnacare Plus?

A daily two-in-one pregnancy food supplement: a Pregnacare multivitamin tablet plus a separate Omega-3 capsule (with 300mg DHA + 60mg EPA). For women trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy.

How is Pregnacare Plus different from Pregnacare Original?

The tablet component is identical in both. Plus adds a separate Omega-3 capsule (300mg DHA + 60mg EPA) not in Original. Choose Plus if you want extra DHA for baby's brain and eye development. Choose Original if you eat oily fish regularly or can't take fish oil.

Why do I need Omega-3 DHA in pregnancy?

DHA is a structural fat in baby's brain cells and retina. The developing baby needs plenty of DHA, particularly in the third trimester when the brain grows fastest. Many women don't eat enough oily fish for adequate DHA intake.

Is Pregnacare Plus safe in pregnancy?

Yes. Pregnacare Plus is designed specifically for pregnancy use. All nutrient levels are within safe pregnancy limits. It uses beta-carotene as the vitamin A source (safe) and purified fish oil (mercury-free).

When should I start taking Pregnacare Plus?

Start when you begin trying to conceive, not when you find out you're pregnant. The neural tube (which folic acid protects) forms very early. DHA supports brain development throughout pregnancy.

How much should I take?

One Pregnacare tablet and one Omega-3 capsule daily, with your main meal.

Can I take the tablet and capsule separately?

Yes. You can take them together at one meal, or split them across two meals. Just take one tablet and one capsule each day.

Should I take with food?

Yes. Food helps absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and fish oil, and reduces the chance of stomach upset. Any main meal works.

How long does the 56-pack last?

Four weeks (28 days) at one tablet + one capsule per day.

Is Pregnacare Plus suitable for vegetarians?

No. The Omega-3 capsule contains fish oil. Vegetarians should use Pregnacare Original (which is vegetarian-friendly).

Is Pregnacare Plus suitable for vegans?

No. Vegans should use Pregnacare Vegan (a separate Vitabiotics product) or another vegan-certified pregnancy multivitamin.

Is Pregnacare Plus Halal?

Yes. The gelatin used in the Omega-3 capsule shell is from Halal-certified bovine source. All Pregnacare products are suitable for a Halal diet.

Is Pregnacare Plus gluten-free?

Yes. Gluten-free, lactose-free, yeast-free, no preservatives, no artificial colours.

What if I have a fish allergy?

Don't use Pregnacare Plus. Use Pregnacare Original (which doesn't contain fish oil) or another fish-free pregnancy multivitamin.

What if I eat oily fish regularly?

If you eat oily fish twice a week (as UK guidance recommends), you're getting plenty of DHA from diet. Pregnacare Original may be enough for you. However, Pregnacare Plus provides consistent daily DHA regardless of diet variations.

Can I take Pregnacare Plus with cod liver oil?

No. Cod liver oil contains retinol (the form of vitamin A that can harm the baby at high doses in pregnancy). Never combine any pregnancy supplement with cod liver oil during pregnancy.

Can I take Pregnacare Plus with other multivitamins?

No. Combining products can push some nutrients above safe pregnancy levels.

Can I take extra fish oil alongside Pregnacare Plus?

No. Pregnacare Plus already provides 300mg DHA + 60mg EPA. Adding more fish oil pushes intake above recommended levels.

What if I miss a day?

Take the tablet and capsule as soon as you remember. If you don't remember until the next day, just carry on with your normal dose. Don't take extras to catch up.

Will the fish oil give me fish burps?

Some people notice a fishy aftertaste. Taking the capsule mid-meal (rather than before or after) helps. Storing capsules in the fridge may also help.

Do I need to take Pregnacare Plus through the whole pregnancy?

Yes, take it throughout pregnancy. After delivery, switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding if you're breastfeeding, or another postnatal multivitamin.

Should I take Pregnacare Plus if I'm on warfarin?

Discuss with your GP or anticoagulation clinic first. Both the vitamin K in the tablet and the fish oil in the capsule affect warfarin. Extra monitoring may be needed.

Do I need a prescription?

No. Pregnacare Plus is a food supplement, available without prescription.

Do I still need to eat healthily if I take Pregnacare Plus?

Absolutely yes. Pregnacare Plus doesn't replace a healthy pregnancy diet. It provides insurance against dietary gaps, particularly for DHA if you don't eat oily fish.
