Product description Pregnacare Original Tablets 30 Pack
What Pregnacare Original is
Pregnacare Original is a daily multivitamin tablet made for women trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy. Each tablet gives you 19 carefully chosen vitamins and minerals in one easy-to-swallow film-coated form.
Vitabiotics makes the product. They are the UK’s leading pregnancy supplement maker, with Pregnacare being their flagship product and the UK’s No.1 pregnancy supplement brand.
The 30-tablet pack lasts one month at one tablet per day. Take with your main meal, ideally at the same time each day for consistency.
Why the pregnancy-specific formula matters
A general adult multivitamin isn’t the right choice during pregnancy. Some nutrients in general multivitamins are wrong for pregnancy at those levels, particularly vitamin A as retinol, which can harm the developing baby at high doses.
Pregnacare uses beta-carotene as its vitamin A source. Beta-carotene is safe in pregnancy because the body converts only what it needs into active vitamin A. Excess is simply not converted, so there’s no toxicity risk.
Pregnacare also gets the folic acid and vitamin D doses right. At 400 micrograms folic acid and 10 micrograms vitamin D, these match exactly what the UK Department of Health advises during pregnancy.
The folic acid story
Folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects (like spina bifida) in the developing baby. The neural tube forms very early in pregnancy, often before a woman knows she’s pregnant. This is why folic acid is recommended from the moment you start trying to conceive, not just from when you find out you’re pregnant.
The standard 400 microgram dose in Pregnacare suits most women. However, some women need a higher 5mg dose (12.5 times the standard amount). This applies if you have a personal or family history of neural tube defects, diabetes, BMI 30 or above, coeliac disease, sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, or take anti-epileptic medicines.
The higher dose needs a prescription from your GP. If any of these apply, don’t rely on Pregnacare alone.
The vitamin D story
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which support the developing baby’s bones. It also supports normal immune function for both mother and baby. Vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy links to problems for both mother (bone health, pre-eclampsia risk) and baby (bone development).
The UK Department of Health recommends 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily for all pregnant and breastfeeding women. Pregnacare gives exactly this amount.
Women with dark skin, limited sun exposure, or previous vitamin D deficiency may need higher doses. Discuss with your GP if you have concerns.
Iron for pregnancy
Iron needs go up during pregnancy to support the increased blood volume and the developing baby. Pregnacare contains 17mg of iron per tablet, matching pregnancy needs.
If you develop iron deficiency during pregnancy (confirmed by blood tests), you’ll need higher-dose iron supplements from your GP or midwife. Pregnacare’s iron level is for prevention, not treatment of established deficiency.
Food supplement status
Pregnacare Original sits in the food supplement category, not the licensed medicine one. This means it doesn’t carry MHRA approval and can’t make medical claims.
We can only use the approved EU/UK health claims for its nutrients. So we can’t say the product ‘prevents’ complications or ‘guarantees’ anything. We can say the nutrients support normal body functions during pregnancy.

Where Pregnacare Original fits in pregnancy nutrition
Good pregnancy nutrition rests on three main things: a varied diet, folic acid supplementation, and vitamin D supplementation. Pregnacare Original covers the folic acid and vitamin D bases while adding 17 more nutrients as insurance against any dietary gaps.
The alternative is to take separate folic acid and vitamin D supplements. This can be cheaper if you’re strict about a varied diet. However, many women prefer the one-tablet convenience of a full pregnancy multivitamin.
Pregnacare Original vs Pregnacare Plus
Pregnacare Plus adds a separate Omega-3 (DHA and EPA) capsule to the standard tablet. Omega-3s support baby’s brain and eye development. If you eat oily fish regularly, you may not need this addition. If you don’t, Pregnacare Plus may suit.
Pregnacare Original vs Pregnacare Max
Pregnacare Max is a higher-specification version with additional nutrients including higher levels of some vitamins, plus additional Omega-3 and calcium. It’s the top-tier product in the range.
Most women don’t need Max levels. Standard Pregnacare Original suits the majority. Max is worth considering if you have specific nutritional concerns or prefer the more comprehensive formula.
Pregnacare Original vs Pregnacare Conception
Pregnacare Conception is designed for the trying-to-conceive stage. It contains additional nutrients thought to support conception, including inositol, L-arginine, and higher folic acid.
Some women use Pregnacare Conception when trying to conceive, then switch to Pregnacare Original once pregnant. Others use Pregnacare Original throughout. Both approaches work.
Pregnacare Original vs Pregnacare Breast-feeding
Pregnacare Breast-feeding is the postnatal version, with adjusted nutrient levels for breastfeeding mothers. Switch to this after delivery if you’re breastfeeding.
Pregnacare Original vs Boots or Sainsbury’s pregnancy multivitamins
Own-brand pregnancy multivitamins from Boots, Sainsbury’s, or other retailers often provide similar nutrient coverage at lower prices. Check the label to confirm they provide 400 micrograms folic acid and 10 micrograms vitamin D, and use beta-carotene (not retinol) as the vitamin A source.
Pregnacare’s advantage is the extensive brand history and Vitabiotics’ specialist focus on women’s supplements. Own-brands can offer very similar coverage at lower cost.
Pregnacare Original vs standalone folic acid plus vitamin D
The most cost-effective approach is separate 400 microgram folic acid tablets plus 10 microgram vitamin D tablets. This meets the minimum UK Department of Health recommendations at low cost.
Pregnacare adds 17 more nutrients for broader nutritional support. If your diet is very varied and includes plenty of iron, iodine, zinc, and B vitamins from food, standalone folic acid plus vitamin D may be enough. If your diet varies more, Pregnacare gives extra insurance.
Pregnacare Original vs NHS Healthy Start vitamins
NHS Healthy Start vitamins are free for women on qualifying benefits or under 18 pregnant. They contain 400 micrograms folic acid, 10 micrograms vitamin D, and 70mg vitamin C.
If you qualify for Healthy Start, the free vitamins meet the basic recommendations. Pregnacare adds broader nutritional coverage. Both are reasonable choices depending on your situation.
Pregnacare Original vs Centrum or general multivitamins
Do NOT use general adult multivitamins during pregnancy. Standard multivitamins contain retinol (the unsafe form of vitamin A during pregnancy) and inappropriate levels of other nutrients.
Always use a pregnancy-specific multivitamin like Pregnacare, or separate folic acid plus vitamin D, during pregnancy. Never use standard Centrum, Berocca, or general adult multivitamins.

Main nutrients in Pregnacare Original
Folic acid 400 micrograms
Folic acid (vitamin B9) is essential for preventing neural tube defects like spina bifida in the developing baby. The neural tube forms in the first 28 days after conception, often before a woman knows she's pregnant.
The 400 microgram dose in Pregnacare matches UK Department of Health guidance for most women. Some women need a higher 5mg dose (see the treatment dosage section above).
Approved health claim: folic acid contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.
Vitamin D 10 micrograms
Vitamin D helps absorb calcium and phosphorus for the developing baby's bones. It also supports normal immune function. The 10 microgram dose matches UK Department of Health guidance for all pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Approved health claims: vitamin D contributes to normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, and to maintenance of normal bones.
Iron 17mg
Iron needs go up during pregnancy to support increased blood volume and the baby's development. The 17mg dose in Pregnacare provides pregnancy-appropriate levels for prevention. If you develop iron deficiency (confirmed by blood tests), you'll need higher-dose iron from your GP.
Approved health claims: iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, and to reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Iodine 140 micrograms
Iodine is essential for the baby's thyroid development and brain development. Iodine deficiency in pregnancy can affect the baby's neurological development. UK women often have low iodine intake, particularly if avoiding dairy and fish.
Approved health claim: iodine contributes to normal cognitive function and to normal thyroid function.
Vitamin B12 6 micrograms
Vitamin B12 works with folic acid in red blood cell formation. It also supports the nervous system. Vegan and vegetarian women may have lower B12 intake from diet, making the supplement particularly valuable.
Zinc 15mg
Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, and normal function of the immune system.
Beta-carotene 2mg (safe vitamin A source)
Beta-carotene is a plant-based precursor that the body converts to vitamin A only as needed. This makes it safe in pregnancy, unlike retinol (the form of vitamin A in cod liver oil and some general multivitamins), which can harm the baby at high doses.
Other nutrients
Vitamin C (70mg), vitamin E (20mg), vitamin K (70 micrograms), thiamin B1 (3mg), riboflavin B2 (2mg), niacin B3 (20mg), vitamin B6 (10mg), biotin (150 micrograms), pantothenic acid (6mg), magnesium (150mg), copper (1mg), and selenium (30 micrograms) round out the 19-nutrient formula.
Other ingredients in Pregnacare Original
Contains soya
The vitamin E in Pregnacare comes from soya. If you have a soya allergy, don't use Pregnacare. Discuss soya-free pregnancy vitamin options with your midwife or GP.
What Pregnacare Original doesn't contain
Gluten-free (safe for coeliac disease, though coeliac women need 5mg folic acid). Lactose-free. Yeast-free. Gelatin-free. No preservatives. No artificial colours. Suitable for vegetarians.
Not suitable for vegans
Check the current pack label. Vitamin D3 (from lanolin) makes standard Pregnacare unsuitable for vegans. Vitabiotics does make a Pregnacare Vegan option separately.
Not tested on animals
Vitabiotics doesn't test Pregnacare on animals.
Tablet excipients
The tablet includes standard multivitamin excipients including maltodextrin, magnesium oxide, microcrystalline cellulose, and film coating materials. Check the current pack label for the full ingredient list.
What is Pregnacare Original for?
Preventing neural tube defects
The folic acid content helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects (like spina bifida) in the developing baby. This is the single most important reason for taking a pregnancy supplement.
Supporting the baby's development
The vitamin D content supports the baby's bone development. Iodine supports thyroid and brain development. Iron supports normal blood formation for both mother and baby. Zinc supports normal reproduction.
Supporting the mother's health
Pregnancy places extra nutritional demands on the mother. Pregnacare helps prevent nutritional gaps that could affect maternal health, particularly iron for red blood cell formation, calcium and vitamin D for bones, and B vitamins for energy.
Reducing tiredness and fatigue
Iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin C, and other B vitamins all contribute to reducing tiredness and fatigue. Pregnancy fatigue is common, and adequate nutrient intake helps.
Supporting immune function
Vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and selenium all contribute to normal immune function during pregnancy.
Filling common pregnancy nutritional gaps
Even with a healthy diet, many pregnant women fall short on some nutrients. Pregnacare fills these gaps as a safety net alongside a varied diet.
What Pregnacare Original isn't for
Not for women needing higher folic acid (5mg). This includes women with a personal or family history of neural tube defects, diabetes, BMI 30+, coeliac disease, sickle cell disease, or on anti-epileptic medicines. See your GP for prescription folic acid.
Not for treating established deficiencies. If blood tests show significant iron, vitamin D, or B12 deficiency, prescription-strength treatment is needed.
Not for breastfeeding. Switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding or a similar postnatal multivitamin after delivery.
Not for children or adult men. Pregnancy-specific formulas are for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive.
Not a substitute for antenatal care, a healthy diet, or medical advice specific to your pregnancy.
Not to combine with other multivitamins or cod liver oil (vitamin A/retinol overdose risk).
How does Pregnacare Original work?
Nutrient replacement and gap-filling
Pregnacare works by delivering pregnancy-appropriate levels of essential vitamins and minerals daily. Each nutrient has its own role: folic acid supports neural tube development, iron supports blood formation, vitamin D supports calcium absorption, and so on.
The multivitamin approach means you don't have to worry about which specific nutrient your diet may be short on. The daily tablet covers the common bases.
Why timing matters
Some nutrients (like folic acid) matter most in the earliest weeks of pregnancy, before you may know you're pregnant. This is why Pregnacare is designed for use from preconception, not just from a positive pregnancy test.
Steady-state nutrient levels
Daily consistent dosing builds and maintains steady nutrient levels in your body. This is more effective than sporadic higher doses. One tablet daily works better than three tablets once a week.
Treatment dosage for Pregnacare Original
At a glance
For: women trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy
Dose: one tablet daily
Timing: with your main meal (any time of day)
Duration: continuous daily use from preconception through pregnancy
For breastfeeding: switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding after delivery
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose
Do not use as a substitute for a varied diet and healthy lifestyle
Standard adult dose
Take one tablet daily with your main meal. Swallow whole with water or a cold drink. Do not chew.
Any main meal works (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). Choose a time that fits your routine so you're less likely to forget. Taking with food helps absorption and reduces the chance of stomach upset from iron.
When to start
Start Pregnacare when you begin trying to conceive, not when you find out you're pregnant. The neural tube (which folic acid protects) forms in the first few weeks of pregnancy, often before a positive pregnancy test.
If you're already pregnant and haven't been taking folic acid, start today. Any protection is better than none. Continue throughout pregnancy.
How long to take Pregnacare Original
Take one tablet daily from preconception through the end of pregnancy. After delivery, switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding if you're breastfeeding, or another postnatal multivitamin if you're not.
Women needing higher folic acid (5mg)
Some women need 5mg folic acid daily instead of the 400 micrograms in standard Pregnacare. This applies if you have:
Personal or family history of neural tube defects (spina bifida)
Diabetes
Sickle cell disease or thalassaemia
Take anti-epileptic medicines (phenytoin, carbamazepine, sodium valproate, and others)
For any of these, you need a prescription for 5mg folic acid tablets. You can take these alongside the rest of Pregnacare's nutrients, or your GP may prescribe a different combination. Don't just take multiple Pregnacare tablets to get more folic acid, as this would push other nutrients (particularly vitamin A) above safe levels.
Women on GLP-1 medicines who become pregnant
GLP-1 medicines (semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide) should be stopped before pregnancy. If you're on one of these and planning pregnancy, discuss with your GP or diabetes team about stopping and switching to safe pregnancy management.
Pregnacare works as your pregnancy multivitamin during and after any medicine changes.
Missed doses
If you miss a day, take the tablet as soon as you remember. If you don't remember until the next day, just carry on with your normal dose. Don't take two tablets in one day to catch up.
For breastfeeding
After delivery, if you're breastfeeding, switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding (a separate Vitabiotics product with adjusted nutrient levels for breastfeeding). Or discuss postnatal vitamin options with your midwife or GP.
How to take Pregnacare Original
Standard use
Take one tablet daily with your main meal. Swallow whole with water or a cold drink.
Swallow whole
Swallow the tablet whole. Don't chew or crush it. If you have trouble swallowing tablets, ask us about Pregnacare Chewable or Pregnacare Liquid, which are alternative formats from the same range.
Take with your main meal
Food helps absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and reduces the chance of stomach upset. Any main meal of the day works: breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Taking on an empty stomach may cause mild nausea, particularly early in pregnancy when nausea is already common. Food usually solves this.
Not with tea or coffee
Avoid taking Pregnacare at the same time as tea or coffee. Tannins in tea and compounds in coffee can reduce iron absorption. Leave at least an hour between your tablet and these drinks.
Consistency matters
Try to take Pregnacare at the same time each day. Setting a phone reminder, keeping the pack somewhere visible, or linking the tablet to a daily routine (like brushing teeth) all help build the habit.
Don't take more than one a day
The one-tablet daily dose is designed to give safe pregnancy levels of each nutrient. Taking more can push vitamin A (from beta-carotene), iron, and other nutrients above safe levels.
If you feel you need more of a specific nutrient (like folic acid for higher-risk pregnancy), see your GP for the right prescription rather than taking extra Pregnacare tablets.
Don't combine with other multivitamins or vitamin A products
Avoid taking Pregnacare alongside another multivitamin, cod liver oil, or standalone vitamin A supplement. Cod liver oil in particular contains retinol (the form of vitamin A that can harm the baby at high doses in pregnancy).
Standalone folic acid, vitamin D, or iron supplements may be needed alongside if prescribed, but always check with your GP or midwife first.
Storage
Store the pack in a cool dry place, out of direct sunlight. Keep the container sealed. Keep well out of reach of children (the iron content can be harmful in accidental overdose).
How quickly you'll notice a difference
Most women don't notice a direct 'feeling different' from Pregnacare. The benefits come from maintaining healthy nutrient levels through pregnancy, supporting both mother and baby's normal development.
If you're starting from low iron or vitamin D levels, you may notice improved energy after several weeks. However, significant deficiencies need proper diagnosis and prescription treatment from your GP or midwife.
Warnings and precautions for Pregnacare Original
Don't combine with cod liver oil or other vitamin A-rich supplements
Above all, don't take Pregnacare alongside cod liver oil, standalone vitamin A supplements, or other multivitamins containing retinol. High-dose vitamin A (as retinol) during pregnancy can harm the developing baby's development.
Pregnacare's vitamin A comes from beta-carotene, which is safe. However, adding retinol from other sources creates the risk.
Don't combine with other pregnancy multivitamins
One pregnancy multivitamin at the recommended dose is enough. Combining products can push some nutrients above safe levels.
Higher folic acid dose needed for some women
Standard Pregnacare provides 400 micrograms folic acid. This is enough for most women. However, some women need 5mg (12.5 times higher) via prescription. This applies if you have a personal or family history of neural tube defects, diabetes, sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, or take anti-epileptic medicines.
Not for breastfeeding
Switch to Pregnacare Breast-feeding after delivery if you're breastfeeding. It has adjusted nutrient levels for the different needs of breastfeeding.
Not for children
Not suitable for children. Keep the pack sealed and well out of reach of children. The iron content in adult pregnancy multivitamins can be harmful to children if taken by mistake in large amounts.
Vitamin K content and warfarin
The vitamin K in Pregnacare can affect how warfarin works. If you take warfarin, discuss with your GP or anticoagulation clinic before starting Pregnacare.
Iron content and iron-loading conditions
The iron content isn't suitable if you have haemochromatosis or other iron-loading conditions. Discuss iron-free pregnancy vitamin options with your GP.
Iodine content and thyroid conditions
The iodine content can affect thyroid function. If you have thyroid disease (over-active or under-active thyroid), discuss with your GP before starting.
Soya allergy
Pregnacare contains soya (in the vitamin E). Don't use if you have a soya allergy.
Interactions with certain medicines
Discuss with your GP or midwife before starting if you take:
Warfarin (vitamin K affects warfarin action)
Levothyroxine (iron reduces absorption, space by 4 hours)
Quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin (iron reduces absorption)
Anti-epileptic medicines (folic acid needs review, higher dose usually needed)
Any prescribed medicines for long-term conditions
Signs of allergic reaction
Rare allergic reactions to ingredients are possible (particularly for those with soya allergy). Symptoms include rash, itching, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. Call 999 if severe.
Overdose
Don't take more than one tablet daily. Accidental overdose can push vitamin A, iron, and other nutrients above safe levels. Seek medical advice immediately if a child accidentally takes multiple tablets.
Driving and machinery
No expected effects on driving or using machinery.
Alcohol
Alcohol should be avoided completely in pregnancy for other reasons. There's no direct interaction with Pregnacare, but the pregnancy alcohol guidance stands.
Side effects of Pregnacare Original
Common side effects
Pregnacare Original is generally well tolerated. Mild stomach upset, nausea, or constipation can happen, especially if taken on an empty stomach or early in pregnancy when nausea is already common. Taking with food usually helps.
Dark stools
The iron content can cause dark or black stools. This is normal and doesn't indicate bleeding. However, very dark, sticky, foul-smelling stools may indicate upper gut bleeding, so see your doctor if unsure.
Constipation
Iron can cause constipation. Pregnancy hormones also cause constipation, so this can be worse in pregnancy. Adequate fibre, fluids, and gentle exercise help.
Nausea
Early pregnancy nausea is common regardless of supplements. Taking Pregnacare with a full meal (not on an empty stomach) reduces the chance of the tablet worsening nausea. If severe, discuss timing options with your midwife.
Allergic reactions (rare)
Rare allergic reactions to ingredients are possible, particularly for those with soya allergy. Symptoms include rash, itching, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty.
Serious side effects requiring urgent help
Above all, seek urgent medical help for signs of severe allergic reaction (facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread rash). Call 999.
Any pregnancy concerns
For any concerns during pregnancy (bleeding, severe abdominal pain, reduced fetal movements, severe headache, or vision changes), contact your midwife or maternity unit urgently, regardless of whether you think it's related to Pregnacare.
Drug interactions with Pregnacare Original
Warfarin
The vitamin K in Pregnacare can affect warfarin. Discuss with your GP or anticoagulation clinic before starting.
Levothyroxine
Iron in the formula reduces levothyroxine absorption. Take levothyroxine first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and Pregnacare at least 4 hours later.
Quinolone antibiotics
Ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and other quinolones bind with iron and calcium, reducing absorption. Leave at least 2 hours between Pregnacare and these antibiotics.
Tetracycline antibiotics
Doxycycline, tetracycline, and lymecycline also bind with iron and calcium. However, tetracyclines are usually avoided in pregnancy anyway.
Anti-epileptic medicines
Phenytoin, carbamazepine, sodium valproate, and other anti-epileptic medicines interact with folic acid. Women on these medicines need 5mg folic acid daily (prescription) and specialist input on both epilepsy management and folic acid dose during pregnancy.
Other multivitamins
Don't combine Pregnacare with other multivitamins, cod liver oil, or standalone vitamin A supplements. Combined intake can push some nutrients above safe pregnancy levels.
Iron supplements
Don't take extra iron supplements alongside Pregnacare unless prescribed by your GP or midwife for confirmed iron deficiency. Pregnacare contains 17mg iron already.
Calcium supplements
Space calcium supplements 2 hours away from Pregnacare, as calcium can reduce iron absorption from the multivitamin.
Alcohol
No direct interaction with Pregnacare, but alcohol should be avoided completely in pregnancy for other reasons.

You need 5mg folic acid daily (prescription), not the 400 micrograms in standard Pregnacare. Discuss with your GP or diabetes team before pregnancy and throughout.
Do I still need to eat healthily if I take Pregnacare?
Absolutely yes. Pregnacare doesn't replace a healthy pregnancy diet. It provides insurance against dietary gaps, not a substitute for good nutrition.
