Utovlan 5mg Tablets FAQs
What is Utovlan (Norethisterone)?
Utovlan is a brand name for Norethisterone, a synthetic form of the natural female hormone progesterone. Progesterone helps to maintain the lining of the womb, which usually breaks down before your period starts. By taking Utovlan, the lining is preserved, allowing you to delay your period until you stop taking the tablets.
What is Utovlan Used For?
Utovlan (Norethisterone) is commonly used to delay your period for up to 17 days when it's inconvenient. You can buy Utovlan online for:
- 1 pack (30 tablets) for up to 7 days of delay
- 2 packs (60 tablets) for up to 17 days of delay
Utovlan should not be used for more than 17 days without consulting your doctor. It should not be used more frequently than every 4 months, and it cannot be purchased over the counter.
Although Norethisterone is also found in some contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapies, Utovlan is not for hormone replacement or contraception. Continue using your usual contraceptive method while taking Utovlan.
How Do I Take Utovlan (Norethisterone)?
To delay your period with Utovlan, take one tablet three times a day, starting three days before your period is due. Continue taking it until you want your period to start again. It will typically begin within two to three days after stopping the tablets. Do not take Utovlan if you are pregnant. Food or alcohol does not affect the absorption or effectiveness of Utovlan.
How Can I Delay My Period?
There are no non-medicinal methods to delay your period. If you're on the combined contraceptive pill, you can delay your period by taking two packs back-to-back without the usual seven-day break.
If you're not on the contraceptive pill, Utovlan is an option. However, women taking the pill should not use Utovlan for period delay. If you're considering this method, consult your GP or check the Period Delay page for more information.
How to Stop Your Period with Utovlan
To delay your period, take one Utovlan tablet three times a day, starting three days before your period is due. Continue until you wish to start your period again. It should begin within two to three days after stopping the tablets. Do not use Utovlan to stop a period that has already started.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Missing a dose may cause light bleeding or spotting, so using panty liners might help.
